I have a printer (L7780) selected as my default printer. Why does the Windows
Photo Gallery select a FAX machine as the default printer? How do I get it to
default to use my default printer?

Place you cursor on the printer you want, right click and in the menu that
appears set "Use as default" or "Set as Default" I am not sure.

You either did not read my posting or you don't know what you're talking
about. I already have a default printer selected. Windows Photo Gallery (it
comes with Vista) does not select the DEFAULT printer in its printer
operations!

Your OP is too short and open to interpretation. So, now I can understand
that you have your default set on the photo printer portion oh HP L7780 (and
this is where you want it to be!), however Vista sends your pictures instead
to the fax machine which is also inside the same box: L7780. Am I right?

I suggest you open up their website and find a place where you can have live
talk with a concierge. I have done it a number of times with HP. Perhaps one
of the reasons is that your drivers are not Vista compatible, it is hard to
determine from your very short description. They will walk you thru the
problem and they set no limitation on when you purchased your hardware as
long as they still support it.

Another option is to uninstall the fax and reinstall it or uninstall and
forget about it for a while and see what is going to happen.

If I select the Printer in the drop down the photo goes to the Printer. My
question still is :Since my DEFAULT printing device is the PRINTER, why does
the Windows Photo Gallery select the FAX as the DEFAULT"?

OK, I just tried to reproduce your calamity.

I opened my Photo Gallery, found a picture at random, and saw my face
(enlarged) in what I believe was Windows Media Player.

On top of this control there is a Print button. I clicked it. A dropdown
menu appeared and I saw two items on it: Print and Order Prints..

I selected "Print."

In response another window appeared and it said: Print Pictures and below:
How do you want to print your picture? <I am wondering how it found out that
it was a picture of me:)> <g>

There is a selection box (combobox) right below it. It lists all your
printers. If this box has been set (by design or accident) to your fax, that
is where your picture will go. No default printer set up will override it.

Any comment?

To me it sounds like a bug. All the other WIndows applications I've used
always defaulted to the DEFAULT printer.

No, it is not a bug. Vista is very humanized.

If you made this selection manually right before you sent the photo to the
printer it MEANS you do not CARE about the default. You've changed your mind
on the spur of the moment.

However, if after you did this selection once the next time the combobox
will display your fax in the window (did not remember your previous
selection) this might be a bug.

There are places in Vista where for the sake of speed it won't ask you to
make any choice. The stuff will be piped down to default after you clicked
"Print."

I have this same problem in Vista Photo gallery, we never print to the fax
function of our mfp printer yet that is what is in the select box even after
I change it to the windows default printer. How do you make your selection
stay put?

It's not a Vista problem, it's a problem with the Windows Photo Gallery. I
have NEVER sent anything to my FAX. In all other applications when you select
to print and a selection list appears the DEFAULT printer is always the one
shown as selected. That's why I say it is a bug!

I am having this same problem. Every time I try to print out of
Windows Photo Gallery I have to manually switch to my default printer.
Photo Gallery seems stuck on a FAX printer. Has anyone found a
solution to this problem?
