Does the printer self-test? There will be some self-test
method, such as holding down a button when the power is
turned ON. Read the manual and do the self-test, the
printer could be dead.
Then make sure the printer is installed and assigned to the
correct printer port/device.

Thanks, but the printer works fine on win98, and there is
only one port and the printer is assigned to that port
(lpt1).

Downloading the drivers is one thing, properly installing them may be
another.
If drivers from an older windows version are present, they should be
uninstalled before an install is attempted.
If this did not occur properly, it may be necessary to go the mfrs web site
and check for a cleanup utility or an uninstall proceedure that lists
registry entries to be manually removed.

Finally, XP likely changed the mode of the parallel port. You may need to
check it in BIOS, and change it to SPP or ECP. SPP is commonly used for
quite a few older printer models. An older mother board may have alternate
nomenclature for the parallel printer port modes. If so, you may see such
things as PS2, Bidirectional, and the like. Generally, you would try
bidirectional first.
