Printer icon no longer appears when printing

Windows 98, 2000 and I think my home XP Pro shows an icon in the lower right
task bar when a document is being printed, or is spooled for printing. The
icon goes away after the printer has (or has finished) the job.

My XP Home edition, on a Dell Vostro 32 bit does not show this icon. As a
result, I sometimes exit the window I'm printing, and the document never
prints because it hadn't completed spooling to the printer.

How can I get that icon back? I don't see any printer properties that lets
one check or uncheck the icon. The icon also used to bring up the contents of
the printer's print jobs if you double-clicked it.

The Vostro is less than a month old, and it has never shown the icon.

I also notice that some print jobs take forever, like in Word, when you
select File->Print, it takes 15-20 seconds for the print window to open.

All my printers areon the network, either on a server or they have their own
IP.

Any ideas?

I haven't tried it yet, but the article helps.
I thought I was in a printer type group, but what I was looking at when I
submitted were search results that I thought would help, not a particular
groups postings. The groups to pick from in the drop-down when submitting
were all non alphabetical, and some are so similar to others you don't know
which one to pick! Then I couldn't (with the time I had) find out how to put
it to a different, or multiple groups.

One of these days!

Thank you for your response and understanding!

I also found out that in the IE status bar at the bottom of the page, the
printer icon momentarily shows up, but that's only for IE, not for all apps.

The instructions at the link you provided worked, however, the notification
boxes were already both checked (local and network) when I got there. After I
exited, then it started working.

Thanks for the info!

HOW TO: Enable or Disable Print Job Notifications in Windows XP

there is a print newsgroup as well so I think you traveled down the wrong
path. But it's a convoluted one at times.
