printer gone after restart?

each time i restart my computer, the wizard comes up. the only way to make
my HP 812 printer work, is to delete the printer AND uninstall the printer
port. then on restart it goes thru the wizard and i choose the HP from the
list. if i power down, then i have no printer (yes, it's default. hell its
the ONLY thing in printers and faxes).
any advice?

If it uses a USB port, open the Device Manager, USB controllers,
Properties of each, and turn off (deselect) "Allow the computer to turn
off this device to save power".

This may not be the problem though.. so also look here for patches,
drivers, and other help:

nope, not new prob. printer is serial (the 3 inch wide connector), old
school. it has been happening for over a year. it's just my mom's computer
and I'm the one fixing it all the time ... :( it's a conflict. also my mira
scanner NEVER works w/ photoshop and usually when i try to get that to work ,
the printer issue reoccurs. at some point, somehow, i get it to work even
after restarts. but the start up always says "new hardware found" and i just
tell mom to NOT go thru the wizard if it starts up.
any other help would be appreciated!

Maybe if you change the parallel port type.. epp, spp, etc.. that can be
done in the BIOS, I believe.

And here are a few things I found with a Google Groups Search:

"he New Hardware Wizard May Detect the Printer Device After Every Restart of
the Computer
http://support.Microsoft.com/default.asp?scid=kb;en-us;Q298370

Follow these directions to reinstall your printer drivers:

Go to Start > Settings > Printers and Faxes. Right-click on any printer
icons shown and select delete.

Reboot your computer and allow XP's "Found New Hardware Wizard" to
install the printer completely.

download/install the latest XP drivers. "

Well, you get the idea.. You can change the search words in the
following search and maybe narrow down the search somewhat:
