printer disappears on restart

each time i restart my computer, the wizard comes up. the only way to make
my HP 812 printer work, is to delete the printer AND uninstall the printer
port. then on restart it goes thru the wizard and i choose the HP from the
list. if i power down, then i have no printer (yes, it's default. hell its
the ONLY thing in printers and faxes).
any advice?

If it is parallel, uninstall all printer related software, turn off
computer/printer.
Turn on printer then turn on computer then install driver when windows "sees"
pinter.

If it is usb, uninstall all printer related software, turn off
computer/printer.
Leave printer off, turn on computer, install software, when it asks "where
is printer" turn it on.

should work, if doesn't, you may have hardware issues.

it's the 3 inch long one (par or serial)? anyway i've done all that. that
ONLY way
that is works is to uninstall the printer AND the port (thru device mgr),
then power off. upon start up it reloads the wizard and works fine. if i
forget to uninstall the printer and restart, then the printer won't work (but
is listed under printers).

any tips?
