USB Problem

I have been unable to reinstall HP all in one printer. The printer
does not appear in the "printers and faxes" window however it does
appear in the boot menu as USB RMD-FDD HP OFFICE JET J6400.
It appears in Universal Serial Bus Controller as an unknown device and
its properties show no drivers installed for this device. When I
unplug the printer it disappears from the list and reappears when I
plug it in.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the printer maybe 10 times so that
doesn't seem to help. But I think that I am getting close to
identifying the problem at least. The printer installation runs OK
except the PC does not recognise the printer when I plug in the USB.
I have tried the add a printer wizard but the PC does not recognise a
new printer I guess because it is already installed although
incompletely.
Can anyone help please.

eventhough the usb
recognizes the device,
it doesn't mean that the
device is not faulty or
not operational.

also, there are two speeds
for usb's.

if your system has the older
and slower usb port (1.0) and the
printers connection is a high
speed version (2.0), then this might
be the problem you are experiencing.

on the other hand if the motherboard
has a high speed usb port (2.0),
you can connect slower devices to it.

with motherboards that have
1.0 usb ports, you might simply
need to install a pci card with
high speed usb ports to connect
your high speed devices (or slow
ones too)

Thank you for your response, however the printer was working fine until I
tried to also run a Photosmart printer with it. (However I am begining to
think that I might have corrupted the USB driver when taking out a flash
drive?) I have tried following the trouble shooter on the USB but I am
confused when I click on the USB unknown device in Device Manager and click

the cd is the hp cd provided
with the printer and contains
the drivers.

however, updated hp drivers
can also be downloaded from
the hp website and saved to
a folder and installed when
ready.

what i would first suggest is
to simply remove/uninstall
"everything" that is related to hp,
then reboot windows.

then simply plug in that printer
and let windows try to do the rest,
focusing on this issue w/o
involving the other photo
device.

also, i would only install
the driver and not the software
package that hp provides.

the bare driver is basically
functional and can be tested
via notepad or mspaint, etc.

if that printer does become
operational, then create a
restore point and begin working
on the photosmart device.

also, if i recall hp may have
additional software designed
to monitor and diagnose
issues with their devices
in windows.
