hi,

i have a HP PSC 2970 multifunction printer.

if i disconnect the USB cable from the PC and and resart the PC, the printer
disappears from the printers section of the control panel.

is there a way to stop this happening? it is causing a problem trying to us
the printer on a print server.

Of course it does. Where do you expect to print to without the printer
hooked up?

not at all. most printer drivers remain when the printer is disconnected.
In fact I have a Laserjet on the same PC which shows the driver even when
the printer is dicsconnected.

The driver disappearing is unusual. I wondered if there was a rweak to
allow the driver to remain just as the USB laserjet printer does.

If you still dont believe me.. disconnect your parallel printer (and most
usb printers) and see if the driver disappeears. (it wont).

Hello ,
Have you checked to be sure all your cables are standard for bidirectional
communication. Old printer cables were a different standard.

The USB device is not connected so isn't seen by your system. It is normal
for USB devices.

It is the way it happens whether you like it or not, learn to live with the
way your device works, it is working properly unlike your expectations.

Alan - you are wrong.

Normally, when you disconnect a USB printer the icon goes grey. It does not
disappear. Try switching off your USB printer - does it uninstall itself? no
not normally.

I have two printers, and one works fine when connected to the print server.
I cannot expect print to the other sucessfully since it uninstalls itself
when disconnected from PC. This however is not normal practice.

If you dont have the answer, keeping quiet is much better than offering (in
incorrect) guess. especially when it is in such a 'I know more than you
about computers' manner.
