Printer Driver Issue

I have an older printer [HP deskjet 870cxi] that still works exceptionally
well. It came with disc that included drivers with additional useful
software. The driver was intended for an NT4 OS. I would like to get the
benefit of the additional software without the NT4 driver. The error,
expectedly is: Printer driver problem... data required by the printer driver
cannot be found. The printer is apparently still working properly with XP
drivers. Guidance sought
