Printer buffer too small to network

Here is a mesage received from Dell technical support regarding the Dell AIO
922 inkjet printer recently supplied new:

"I would like to inform you that the memory buffer for dell inkjet printers
is very less and due to this reason the Inkjet printer can only be used with
Stand alone system and cannot be used for networking."

I find this very difficult to believe: that a printer cannot be used over a
network! Can this be correct and if so is there any way round it?

Inkjets historically have a very small memory, big laser printers have the
option of adding more RAM, just like a PC.

However I use all my Canon inkjets over my network with no problems.

What happens when you try to install it over the network... .granted, it's
for Windows 2000 and XP PCs ONLY, there are no drivers written by Dell for
9x PCs, but I see no real reason why the printing site should not work over
a network, even though the scanning and fax sides probably will not.

Thanks for that. I have printed to ink jet printers before over a network
with less powerful machines (Windows 98 to windows 2000). Both were epson
printers however.

The current computers (both running Windows 2000), are networked to the host
running XP to which the Dell printer is attached and off of which it works
fine. I can even 'see' the printer over the network, and add it to both
machines. Other network features work fine. The problem comes when you try
to print over the network to the Dell printer (even before that if you hover
the mouse over the printer icon) when it says it cannot connect or is not
connected. I've tried deleting the printer and adding it again, running
troubleshooter....and now Dell tell me it can't be done anyway.

Why would a printer need a bigger buffer to print across a network than to
print locally in any case?
