Print subsystem is unavailable - Win2000

L

L Mehl

Hello --

My printing subsystem was trashed after opening a large and complex Word
document.

Before doing a major cleanout or printer-related files and devices, I could
neither print nor add a printer.

I now see the subject message when I attempt to add a printer.

I have the following file:
c:\winnt\system32\spoolsv.exe]

I have reloaded Win 2000.

This sequence suggested in another newsgroup does not solve the problem.
-------------------------------------------------
Check that the Print Spooler service is running:
Start > Settings > Control Panel
Administrative Tools > Services
Find the service "Print Spooler".
Check that it is set to "Automatic" start-up.
If it is not running then start it (right click it and select "Start")

My setting already says "Automatic"
-------------------------------------------------

Another suggestion I saw was:
-------------------------------------------------
Run regedit.exe, then navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Spooler
"ImagePath" must be a Reg_Expand_SZ type.

My registry shows this value
-------------------------------------------------

Is there something I should reinstall?

Thank you in advance for any help.

Thanks for writing.

In Print Spooler Properties > General tab
Service status: shows "Stopped"
When I click the Start button, I get this message:
=======================================================
Microsoft Management Console
---------------------------
Could not start the Print Spooler service on Local Computer.

Error 1058: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or
because it has no enabled devices associated with it.
---------------------------
OK
=======================================================

Device manager shows no devices like "Printers ...".
I assume this is because I performed a major cleanout or printer-related
files and devices after reading newsgroup postings after the problem first
appeared.

When I click Start > Settings > Printers > Add printer
I get the message:
=============================
Out of Resources
---------------------------
Printer operation cannot continue due to lack of resources. The print
subsystem is unavailable.
---------------------------
OK

=============================

Do I have a chicken-and-egg situation here?

Can you help me further?

Thanks for any assistance.

Larry

I'll assume it's not disabled. The "major cleanout" may well be the problem.
Is the 'Remote Procedure Call (RPC)' service running?

If so these may help.

Thank you for your help.

On another topic:
Can you tell me what tool you use to monitor your newsgroup postings and

Dave --

I performed the In-place Windows 2000 upgrade.

Sad to report that the problem persists.

When I use Start > Settings > Printers > Add Printer
I get the message:
========================
Out of Resources
---------------------------
Printer operation cannot continue due to lack of resources. The print
subsystem is unavailable.
---------------------------
OK

========================

My folder
C:\WINNT\system32\spool\PRINTERS
is empty.

Are there some essential files which must be in that or other folders in
order for the "Add Printer" function to work?

A new problem which I can live with until the printer problem is fixed is
that a "Windows Installer" window frequently appears:
containing the message
"Preparing to install"

Thanks for any additional help.
