print spooler problem

one of my end users here has a dell latitude d610. we have had it maybe 3
months. i initially setup it up very basic (XP pro SP2) and setup an older
hp deskjet printer using a parallel cable through the dell docking station.
the printer would not print crrectly at all. spit half pages / blank pages
out, all kinds of wierd things. i thought the, easy enough, driver issue.
so i download the latest drivers and it still does the same thing. i figure,
bad printer. so i replace it with one of the same model, and had the same
issues. uninstall / reinstall the driver, same thing.

in the meanime, the user installs software without me knowing that destroyed
his machine. i thought about rebuilding the hive, but changed my mind. blew
the machine away and reload. when the time comes, i atempt getting the hp
deskjet working again. still no go. exact same problem. i figure, ok,
unlikely but maybe both of these older printers are toast. i buy him a new
epson c86. i use these all the time on XP machines, always work very well.
i setup it up and try to print a test page. same problem! it throws an
error about the print spooler asking if i want to send it to microsoft (the
usual). this triggers a thought for me. i check out the print spooler
service and it has been shut off. i turn it back on, try again, and same
thing. every time, same thing. so wierd. i try setting it up with the
parallel cable directly into his laptop, smae problem. i call dell, and
their solutions were to try new drivers or reload the op sys. AGGGHHHH!!! i
couldn't get it threw there head that i had already done that!

so, sorry for the long question, but do any of you know a possible solution
or cause? at this point it seems to be hardware, but checking into all
possibilty's (and due to the fact dell won't do anything about it), i wanted
to see if you guys know any possible causes. in the meantime, i'm going to
try swapping the parallel cable, as well as try a usb cable. just need to
locate one somewhere.

thanks in advance for the help.

Did you remember to install the Dell chipset drivers after the fresh
install?

I'd certainly connect via USB if it is possible to do so.
