Print spooler is apparently not functionning

Whne I print jobs having more than a few pages, the progress bar stops
at a certain point (say 5 of 20 pages) and, after the printer warms up,
proceeds in increments of 5 or so pages until the job is complete.

The printer is connected to my Windows XP SP2 computer via a Linksys
PPSX1SERVER print server. My other computer (Windows 2000) is connected
to the same printer via my local network and has no problems printing
long documents.

Something happened recently to cause this delay problem. My XP computer
did not have the problem when the current printer (an HP Laserjet 5) was
originally installed.

DOes anyone have some idea what the problem may be here?

Thank you.

I don't know where to control the print spooler. The NET PRINT command?
What parameters? NET PRINT START?

Try Start > Printers and Faxes > right-click on icon for the printer at
issue > properties > Advanced tab > make sure that radio button is
selected next to "Spool print documents so program finishes print faster"

I need help really badly. The print spoolers are not running and the
printers have disappeared in the Printers and Faxes section of the Control
Panel. I am not experienced and do not want to try to work with the
registry. So, pursuant to instructions on Bruce Sanderson's webpage and with
the suggestion of Cari, I downloaded Windows 2003 Resource Kit Tools and
attempted to run the cleanspl utility. It did not work. After 2 days of
trying to find out what my Computer Name was (right click on My Computer,
Properties, Computer Name is a tab), I put my computer name in the dialogue
box of the cleanspl utility and clicked on Clean Spool. Another dialogue box
showed up which said as follows:

"Unable to enumerate the files in the directory. '\\computer name(it named
the name of my computer)\C$\Windows\system32\spool\Printers' matching the
filter *.spl. The network location cannot be reached. For information about
network troubleshooting, see Windows Help. The specified directory cannot be
validated."

So that is the story. Meantime, I cannot print and need to desperately soon
since this is the source of my livelihood. I really need some help and would
appreciate any replies. But because I am not an expert even remotely, if
anyone knows what to do, could you be very specific, including what files NOT
TO DELETE when I get the clean spooler to work?

Thank you very much.

I had to disable the print spooler for my Canon ip5000 as it would not print
witht he spooler and hung up the computer when I tried to access the printer
driver to delete the unprinted file. There must be some wierd bug in xp
pro - maybe something to do with a recent automatic update - that has
screwed up several peoples' printer/spooler functions. Lots of posts about
this issue. I've never had problems with spoolers, and my computer
experience goes back to the first IBM pc's and DOS days. So far, Canon
can't solve the problem and none of the fixes listed on the MS support site
have worked. This is beyond annoying!!!!!!!!

First of all, you should always start your own topic, rather than
piggy-backing on someone else's. It will increase your chances that
someone will see and respond to your post.

Given the tone of your post, the fact that it took you two days to
figure out the name of your computer, and the lack of information in
your post (it seems as if you have a network, but you haven't explained
anything about it), I suggest that you find a local computer
professional (not, as MVP Malke says, your local equivalent of
BigBoxUSA) and have them take a look at your situation.

printer on xp and other puter 2000

Hello.

I have 2 puter as well, one XP the other ME. They are not linked together but share the same internet via linksys. I don't know what happened but suddenly I can not print anymore. I have a Lexmark 4270 and tried everything before I contact technical support whom told me to change my spooler settings and it worked for a few months and now It's not working anymore. We tried all the different combinations of settings and it boiled down to them telling me that my printer is fine and it's not the OS and that I should call DELL... and tell DELL that my puter isn't sending the spooler data. Got me. I hope I gave you at least some insight.
