Print delay

I have a XP-pro sp2 system that I keep clean with spybot and other programs
as well as defragged. Lately whenever I print anything, even one line from
word, the printer a Dell A960 first cycles then there is a 20-30 second
delay before printing. Could this be something caused by XP? Did not used to
do this and I changed nothing deliberately.
Thanks

You could have a look at the Dell A960 printer manual. Available both as a
HTML and as a .pdf document. Consult the 'Troubleshoot' section.

That was what I did before coming here, common sense.
Nothing there helped so I am looking at what in XP might have caused it.
I have lots of memory for other programs and a one word test message
shouldn't eat up that. The problem exists even if only the printing program
"word or whatever" is only one running.
