Need Help! Print Services for UNIX

Hi All,

If this is a duplicate, please fogive. My news server is acting
wierd again and I reposted through Google.

Help! I am pulling my hair out!

Directions:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324078

Configuration:

Network:
pure TCP/IP over Ethernet
NetBios over TCP/IP blocked

Computer one (server, yes I know, it is not really a server):
XP-Pro-SP2 (no additional hot fixes)
Dell A960 multifunction printer (name=A960)
Print Services for UNIX installed from Add/Remove pgms
Print Services for UNIX set to "automatic"
all firewalls are off

Computer two (client):
XP-Pro-SP2 (no additional hot fixes)
all firewalls are off

What works (sort of):

On the client, at the command line:
lpr -S 192.168.2.4 -P A960 c:\test.prt

On the server:
"test.prt" shows up, then disappears
the Dell status monitors pop up and starts printing

Well, works almost. The Dell status monitor gets
to about 27% then freezes and takes out the print spooler.
the A960 never actually prints anything. I have to reboot
to get the spooler working again

What doesn't work:
Client:
TCP/IP port set up in Printer "server properties"
to point to 192.168.2.4, lpr, queue name "A960"
(RAW doesn't work either)

Printing to the "IP_192.168.2.4" port with either
the Dell A960m driver or the "generic text" driver
crashes the print spooler. I also have to reboot
to get back into printer properties

Server:
Completely quiet. Nothing in the queue. No Dell
print server.

Editorial comment: AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

Does anyone know what is going on here? What am I doing wrong?

Many thanks,
--Tony

did you try installing the UNIX print services on the client ?

Hi Haggis,

No I didn't. I didn't think I had to. Though client side was
automatically built in.
Though all you had to do was configure the port. But rereading the
directions, it
clearly says:

You can use Print Services for UNIX to...Send print jobs to
UNIX servers.

If it was just that easy I am going to ...

Many thanks,

Besides installing it, did you may the TCP/IP Print spooler server be an
automatic service? I have seen where the service was set for 'manual" and the
print jobs never showed up until the service was started.

Hi Haggis and Yves,

I have the server's TCP/IP Print Spooler on Automatic. (As a double
check, I made
sure the server could still recieve command line LPR jobs from the
client.)

After starting UNIX print services on the client (also now on
"automatic"), I get the
following error message from the server's "system" event log:

Source: LPDSRV
Event ID: 4010
Request from 192.168.2.5 could not be satisfied
possibly due to network problems

I thought this was fixed in SP2. Any ideas?

Many thanks,
--Tony
