Long delay in opening files in Win XP

I am noticing that if I try to open an Office XP file from Windows Explorer,
there is a delay of up to 60 seconds before the app loads. If I load the app
first, the files can be opened instantly from the "File Open" menu in the
app. But even if the app is running, loading the file from explorer takes up
to 30 seconds.

Also, from Outlook, if I click on a link in an email, there is a delay of
about 30 seconds before the browser window opens. Outlook is locked up during
this period.

I am using Windows XP Pro SP2, Office XP (all updates are installed) on a
2.6 GHz P4 with 1 GB RAM.

Anyone have any idea what may be causing these delays?

Where are the files stored?
What type of server are you connecting to with Outlook?

There was an earlier post to the microsoft.public.windows.general newsgroup
dated 8/26 at 11:16 AM with a similar problem.
The cause was traced down a "Creative XFi soundcard" and associated
software.

Thanks JS for the tip about the other thread. I think my problem is different
to what he was experiencing. But that thread did prompt me to download
process explorer which has given me some more insight into what is going on.

I suspect Acrobat Pro might be the culprit. I have the Acrobat PDF Maker
extension installed for Office 2003 (not XP as I previously indicated, by the
way). I notice (and it may be coincidence at this stage) that there is a
process called "Acrobat Info" that pops in and out from time to time. If
Acrobat Info is running, the files take a long time to open. If it is not
visible, they seem to open instantly.

I also noticed that a file which has previously been opened in a session
will then re-open instantly for the rest of that session. I will try
uninstalling Acrobat completely and see if that fixes the problem.

Links in emails in Outlook are still slow to open however. I am not
connecting Outlook to any server, just POP accounts.
