post-settings windows login problem

Hi,

I have windows XP tablet. When I switch on my computer it proceeds nicely to
the log on prompt. I log in (to the computer only - no domain/network) and
within seconds I can see my desktop and taskbar. The arrow is visibile (with
a little egg-timer) and I can move it with my mouse. However if I move it
over the taskbar or start menu the arrow disappears and I see an egg-timer. I
can click on items on my desktop and they will open (although slowly). My
hard drive light indicates that the drive is being read or written. This
persists for up to 2.5 minutes.

Can anyone illuminate the problem here? Having searched microsofts knowledge
base, MSN and Google I cannot come up with anything.

Many thanks

Hi,

Sorry there was a mistake in my original post. The hard drive light
actually flashes very little (practically not at all)for 2 minutes or so.
Then the drive starts working again and the start menu becomes active in
about 30 secs. Windows seems to be waiting for something. I didn't think it
was network related because I thought this while setting were loaded...

Thanks again.

For almost all problems/issues with XP it's always good to check
the Application and System Event logs. No system is working OK
if either log contains any errors (Red Icons).
Click Start, Run (Type) EventVwr.Msc [Enter]
Expand each logs contents by clicking the + symbol in the Left pane.
Then Double-Click each Red Icon to view the details of the event.

To get a better idea of issues, it's best to clear all 3 logs and then
reboot the PC and check the logs immediately after a boot.
