Possible MPEG codec corruption.

I am having trouble playing MPG/MPEG video files lately and I believe it may
be caused by corrupt codecs, probably from a recent minor head crash. It's
only limited to MPEG videos; AVI, WMV, and MP3 files play normally. Here's
the problems I've been having under XP:

*Files being reported shorter than what they are, ie, a 2-minute clip is
reported as only 30 seconds.
*Player(s) freeze on a frame during playback. The player itself continues
to work and respond normaly, but it just stops at one particular frame.

I've done searches on the forums and tried some of the solutions
recommended. Here's what I tried and the results:
*Played clips under MP9 in 98SE. MPEGs played normaly so file corruption
can be ruled out.
*Tried other players under XP (Winamp, Quicktime, iTunes, an earlier version
of MP). Same problems.
*Downloaded and installed WM9 codec package from MS site. Same problems.
*Changed Media Player from v10 to 11beta. Problems persist.
*Played MPEGs off websites. No problems there. The problems only come from
MPEGs already on my HDD.
*Did chkdsk of where the MPEG files are. No disk problems were detected,
but the MPEGs are still not playing properly.
*Restored MPEGs from recent backups. Same problems.

Anything I may have missed? Anyway to correct the MPEG problems?

Before I forget, my specs:
AMD Athlon, 700MHz, 256MB
Media Player 11 beta (updated from v10)
DirectX 9.0c

I used sherlock, but it reported that no codecs were broken. I still can't
get the MPEGs I have to play properly under XP, though they do play under
98SE.

Recently, I upgraded my CD/DVD burnning software (RecordNow) to a XP version
since the one I had caused "Page fault in non-paged area" BSODs. I'm going
to investigate it and see if that's the cause of the MPEG problems since it
did instal codecs with the software.
