Popping Sound From Speakers

My system works well, and the sound when CDs are played is very good.
However, when doing normal work, I hear a popping, crackling sound coming
from the speakers.
This is a recent development. Can someone suggest why it is happening--and
how to fix it?

Do you have some other electronic/electric devices near the speakers or
their wires? If so, move them away.

Make sure the speakers are firmly and fully plugged in at all wire
connections.

I have no other devices (except, perhaps the telephone) near the speakers
and the connections are secure. Thanks for the suggestions.
