Pop-up Stopper interfering with Norton Antivirus email scan?

T

Tom Gordon

I have been having the following problem:
When downloading my email using Netscape Messenger 7.1, the process
stopped before all emails were downloaded.

At first, I suspected Norton Antivirus' inbound email scanner, because
if I turned it off, the problem did not occur. But running without the
email scan was not an acceptable solution, so ended up uninstalling
and reinstalling Norton Antivirus, but to no avail.

On a hunch, I turned off Panicware's Pop-up Stopper (Free Edition) and
the problem went away, even with the email scanning turned on. I have
temporarily quit using Pop-up Stppoer in favor of the Google taskbar
and its popup stopper, and still no problems. But I am curious if
anyone alse has experienced this or a similar problem

IIRC NAV 2004 has pop-up stopper-related tools, too.

Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It provides no
additional protection and even Symantec says it's not necessary:

<paste>
Note: Disabling email scanning does not leave you unprotected against
viruses that are distributed as email attachments. NAV Auto-Protect will
scan any incoming files, including email, as they are saved to your hard
drive. Email scanning is just another layer on top of this. To make sure
that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep Auto-Protect
enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have the most recent
virus definitions.

I use NAV and Pop-Up Stopper at the same time on three of my computers with
no problems. However I don't have Netscape, that may causing your problem.

In the process of trying to block the messenger popup, the
stopper kills the email download. With netscape, try editing
your prefs from the menu, turning the messenger launch at
startup off. Close and restart Netscape. As an alternative
try using Mozilla 1.7, everything but NSmessenger is there
