POLL: BEST ANTIVIRUS

A

Arvindra

Hi ppl I recently installed XP Pro and the system was
booting enormously fast without any programs installed.
But as I installed Norton Antivirus 2004 Pro it started
crawling. Now it boots up sooooo alowly. So I decided
removing Norton AV and talked to th ppl at Norton they
said that I could return it to the same shopkeeper. But
now should I return it or keep it because I have no AV
software installed currently and would like ur
PROFESSIONAL opinions on most SAFE and THE FASTEST AV
software available. By the way what do you MVP's use???
Should I keep Norton.

Please suggest only 1 GOOD AV software and not Multiple
good ones coz I'm bad at choosing.

You'll find that there are varying opinions. I use Symantec AV
Corporate Edition at work with little problems. However there are
differences between that and their home product. I've heard about
enough problems with Norton AV Home products not to recommend that.

One that is highly recommended both for accuracy in catching virus and
low system impact is eTrust from CA. They have a free download
available with free 12 month subscription for Windows users. For more
info see http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/.

I enjoy Avast. Avast does everything I need plus it includes an additional
function called "VRDB", which I believe stands for Virus Repair Database or
something to that effect. It has the ability to restore files corrupted by
viruses, which is neat. Also, this is the only software I've used that
actually finds viruses in emails - I've used NAV2000, AVG, NAV Corporate
7.6, McAfee (don't remember version), etc., and none of them caught any
viruses received via email.

So, my personal recommendation (that is, I use it at home as well as work
and it's caught many many viruses, but I don't think that's considered
professional) would go to Avast.

I've been using Norton AV for over 5 years, just upgraded to the 2004
edition recently, haven't ever experienced any problems.

Now uninstall it and install AVG, and see how much of a drag NAV is on your
system.

I like AntiVir. It's free and has daily updates. I have had too many
conflicts with Norton but none with AntiVir. I have also had no viruses nor
worms since installing AntiVir. It protected me from Sasser, Peni5,
Welchia, and others.

I have used AVG for a very long time. It works great, has automatic
upgrades and is free. Why look anywhere else?

Norton is usually good. Try turning off the extra settings, and run it
in 'bare bones' mode to see if that is any better

Greetings --

You'll get nearly as many differing opinions as you will
responses.

I used, and recommended, Norton Antivirus and then Norton Internet
Security, for many years, on Win98, WinNT, Win2K, and WinXP, all
without any significant problems. I had used McAfee prior to that.
But it's been several years since I've been tempted to try McAfee
products. Their quality seemed to take a steep nose-dive after they
were acquired by Network Associates.

However, when my subscription to Symantec's updates for Norton
Internet Security 2002 came up for renewal (at a cost substantially
higher than the preceding year's subscription), I decided to try less
expensive solutions. I downloaded and installed the free version of
GriSoft's AVG (http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php ) and the
free version of Sygate's Personal Firewall
(http://smb.sygate.com/free/default.php ). Both have proven to be
easily installed, easy to use, and quite effective. Additionally, I
was pleasantly surprised to see a small but very noticeable
improvement in my PC's performance, once I'd replaced the Symantec
product.

Personally i don't like Norton Anti Virus. I prefer AVG anti virus
www.grisoft.com It's free and it does the job

Problem with AVG is recently variants (and their were only four at the
time) of some fairly prolific viruses weren't detected by AVG 10 days
after most other vendors detected the virus. So yes, it's free, but it
only mostly does the job.

No product is perfect and they all miss something. BUT not all AV programs
hog system resources like NAV.
