I have a computer, AMD XP 2200, 785 Meg SDRAM 80 Gig harddrive. Installed XP
Pro with SP1, then Norton AV Pro 2004. No problem. Updated to XP SP2 also
with no problem.

Hard disk crashed and was replaced. Installed XP Pro then SP2. Then
installed Norton AV 2004 Pro, Norton was activated on line just like it
should be appeared no problem. Rebooted per instructions, system would not
boot. System starts to boot, gets to desktop with several of the icons
showing, then dies. Requires hard restart.

Uninstalled norton, removed SP2, installed norton, installed SP 2, system
works perfectly.

Any ideas out there???

TIA

What's the problem?

The problem is that my customer does not have the ability to install XP with
SP1 then Norton AV then update with SP2. His restore disk comes with XP and
SP2 included. That is the problem. Norton will not allow the system to
boot up except in safe mode.

Yes, the system locks up. The mouse moves, but that is all. No control of
the keyboard, cntrl, alt, del does not work either. Yet, if Norton is
installed prior to SP2, it works perfectly so does SP2.

Nothing to do with SP2, but I had to do that with Norton AV2004 and Norton
Firewall last week.

Both failed to activate over the Internet, so I ended up typing in a long
string of numbers on my phone, and then entering the returned code into
them. Each one activated - for about two minutes and then disabled itself
because they said that they hadn't been activated. After three hours trying
to get them to stay activated I gave up - took them back to the shop and got
my money back.

Avoid any Norton products that require activation like the plague - they are
obviously incapable of writing software that can accomplish this reliably.
By comparison, Microsoft's activation system is wonderful - works over the
net and stays activated. Perhaps Norton ought to licence the software from
MS.

Well, I wouldn't exactly say "Microsoft's activation system is
wonderful"; IMO no activation system is desirable but I get the idea
of what you're trying to say. I do agree with you regarding Symantec
software in general. They have consistently screwed up good software
they purchased from other companies or which they bought out.

I expect we will see the downfall of Drive Image and Partition Magic
in the near future. Too bad, both were excellent at one time.

Regards.

I'm running Norton AV2004 too. I have not installed SP2 yet. I read about
conflicts with Norton and several other software packages. This list of
conflicts is so long, I plan to wait 3-4 months before attempting SP2.

Thanks for all the information.

Norton Systemworks 2004 causes a DCOM error cause when you update it it
downsloads the new av & DMI proggies & causes errors even if u dont have sp2
but sp2 isnt out yet.

In reply to Nobody Here's earlier post, what kind of a stupid statement
is that to say that NAV is a virus?!

the lack of oxygen has clouded his judgment.

I do not know what the you are talking about. I have the problem with a
customers computer. They are using NAV. I use NAV along with Panda. I
have been using Norton products since the 1980s. The problem is that you
decided to stick your tongue in where it does not belong. It appears that
your head is up your ass or somewhere it should not be.

If you would stop and read the original problem message instead of trying to
be so stupid, you would see that if you install Windows XP Pro and SP2, you
cannot install NAV 2004 pro. It hangs the system. The question is what can
be done about it. If you are to ignorant to read, then just keep your
comments to yourself. If you install Windows XP then NAV 2004, do all the
updates, registration and everything else required, THEN install SP 2, the
system works perfectly.

I did a clean install on 2 machines here (XP Pro)...SP2 applied, and then
installed NIS 2004. No problems whatsoever. Seamless integration into the
new Windows Security center after Live Update is run. Perhaps there is a
problem with a BIOS setting or a piece of hardware on the machine that you
are working with.
