(Freeware)
Windows OS: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
Languages: English (16-bit versions available in English and German)
Description: External version of Total Commander's built-in viewer.
Lister is a standalone viewer for text, binary, hex, html and unicode
files. It can also display bitmaps and multimedia, and other bitmap
formats through Irfanview as a filter. COMMENTS: Lister is very handy
for reading html files offline if you only want the text. It strips
the html tags (leaving only text and URLs) without "breaking" the page
layout much.

LAME
(Freeware) (open source: GNU LGPL)
Windows OS: Windows
Other OS: Linux; Unix
Languages: English
Description: Following the great history of GNU naming, LAME originally
stood for LAME Ain't an Mp3 Encoder. LAME started life as a GPL'd patch
against the dist10 ISO demonstration source, and thus was incapable of
producing an mp3 stream or even being compiled by itself. But in May
2000, the last remnants of the ISO source code were replaced, and now
LAME is the source code for a fully LGPL'd MP3 encoder, with speed and
quality to rival all commercial competitors.

I suggest the following for the rest (Dmitry Kutsanov is not the author
of LAME):

information about the LAME project, but not ready-to-use LAME encoders

Hi Demetris,

Are you objecting to the use of the LAME name to describe a subset of LAME files? If Dmitry Kutsanov
is the author of the files that are listed in the PL2005 LAME description then it seems to me you
are coming at this from the wrong direction. . .

I can't use the description you posted. Pricelessware = specific software files that can be
downloaded. Pricelessware is not best source code or best group of related programs or best program
ideas - it's ACF participants' favorite software FILES - the ones that they download and use.

http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2006/2006PL-Procedures.php

"The Pricelessware List is a compilation of the favorite Freeware programs of the readers of
alt.comp.freeware." "The software must be available for download."

The files that are listed in the program description are the basis for selecting Pricelessware apps.
When you submit a program description you need to include the file version, the date the file was
released, the file name(s) and the file size(s). FYI - PL2005 selections include earlier versions of
Winamp and Free Agent (not the current versions). There are a number of "last freeware versions" on
PL2005 etc. etc. etc. File information must be specific.

Languages: English
Description:
FileNote is a little shell extension that allows you to add textual
descriptions to your files. It adds one command to the shell context
menu of a file object. This command lets you easily edit or create a
text file that has the same name as the initial file, but with the
extension TXT.
For example, if you have a file, MyImage.jpg, you right-click on that
file and choose the FileNote command from the context menu. A new text
file called MyImage.txt is created and Notepad is opened to edit that
text file. If a text file with that name already exists, it will be
opened for viewing/editing.)

[PL] PL2006 Program Submittals -- LAME

CATEGORY: MULTIMEDIA
SUBCATEGORY: Audio: Encoder
AUTHOR'S EMAIL ADDRESS (munged): n/a

Information as is up to field 08:

LAME
(Freeware) (open source: GNU LGPL)
Windows OS: Windows
Other OS: Linux; Unix
Languages: English
Description: Following the great history of GNU naming, LAME
originally stood for LAME Ain't an Mp3 Encoder. LAME started life as a
GPL'd patch against the dist10 ISO demonstration source, and thus was
incapable of producing an mp3 stream or even being compiled by itself.
But in May 2000, the last remnants of the ISO source code were
replaced, and now LAME is the source code for a fully LGPL'd MP3
encoder, with speed and quality to rival all commercial competitors.

I suggest the following for the rest (Dmitry Kutsanov is not the
author of LAME):

09 (LINK 1 DESCRIPTION) Project Page (This page has the source code
and information about the LAME project, but not ready-to-use LAME
encoders for programs like CDex, EAC, or Winamp. For ready-to-use
encoders, use any of the two download links.)

Hi Demetris,

Are you objecting to the use of the LAME name to describe a subset of
LAME files? If Dmitry Kutsanov is the author of the files that are
listed in the PL2005 LAME description then it seems to me you are coming
at this from the wrong direction. . .
Hello, Susan,

LAME is wider than the sets compiled by mitiok, and the presentation
does not do justice to the team of LAME developers. mitiok has probably
done more than anyone else to make known the LAME codec (I, as many
other people, learned about LAME from his site and I use his sets to
this day), but mitiok's sets and LAME are *not* the same thing.

Also, in my eyes, the description now is not clear (and it wouldn't be
much clearer even if the name changed to something more specific, like
"mitiok's LAME set"): Does it say that acf members consider LAME the
best MP3 encoder, and that mitiok's compile is just their favourite
among the best LAME compiles? Or does it say that they only care about
mitiok's set and that, if mitiok stopped compiling, they would stay at
his last set of LAME, considering this the last version of LAME?

(The question is not hypothetical: earlier this year mitiok took his
site down, and was finally persuaded by the people at Hydrogen Audio,
where most LAME developers are members, to bring it back:
http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=35118)

(And I believe that, if mitiok persisted in his decision, the second
download site I suggested to add, rarewares, would host his latest LAME
set, along with the other sets they host: they are the people who
persuaded him to bring back his site.)
I can't use the description you posted. Pricelessware = specific
software files that can be downloaded. Pricelessware is not best source
code or best group of related programs or best program ideas - it's ACF
participants' favorite software FILES - the ones that they download and
use.

http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2006/2006PL-Procedures.php

"The Pricelessware List is a compilation of the favorite Freeware
programs of the readers of alt.comp.freeware." "The software must be
available for download."

The files that are listed in the program description are the basis for
selecting Pricelessware apps. When you submit a program description you
need to include the file version, the date the file was released, the
file name(s) and the file size(s). FYI - PL2005 selections include
earlier versions of Winamp and Free Agent (not the current versions).
There are a number of "last freeware versions" on PL2005 etc. etc. etc.
File information must be specific.
My information *was* specific: "11 (LINK 2 DESCRIPTION) download v
3.96.1 encoders/decoders (2004-07-24) (601 KB)". Only the file name is
missing.

To conclude:

In my opinion, either the program name has to change to something that
specifies that it is mitiok's LAME set, or, if it stays, mention must be
made of the LAME project. If the second, I'm sure there are better ways
than the one I suggested.

Greetings,
Demetris

PS

About source code: I never said anything about "best source code". I
mentioned source code in my suggested revision and note only to make
clear what the project page is and is not.

Also, about source code again, in your reply to another description I
submitted (FreeMind), you wrote:

"Standard practice has been to show only Windows downloads on the PL
pages (no source files) - that's open to discussion if you think the
standard should be changed."

I never mentioned source code there (or anywhere else in my submittals):

"(LINK 2 DESCRIPTION) download page: v 0.8.0 (2005-09-06) Installer
(3MB), Installer w/ SVG export (8MB), Zipped binaries (3MB), Zipped
binaries w/ SVG export (8MB)" (Again, file names are missing from my
description.)
