The program description for the PL2006 nomination should be for EITHER the Liteware version OR the
"last freeware version".

Please post comments on your preferred version.

The version that is 100% legal - ie. no intrusion on the mp3 patents.

There's no need for us to aggravate or create another problem for the
dMC author because we're too lazy or tech unsavy to add mp3 codecs on
our own. Besides, if we're all about freeware, we should be using
ogg.vorbis anyway, not mp3.

The 2005 description gives a download link for version 10 that still works.
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2005/PL2005MULTIMEDIA.php

Voting on the version resulted in 1 vote for v 10, 1 vote for both
versions and what appears to be 1 vote for v 11. I vote for version 10
b/c I can't follow what is going on with 11.5 and I'm not about to
download it and install it to find out. Would anyone else like to comment?

If it is preferred that the download comes from a descriptive page then
you might like to use this at my website
http://stuff.goatdairying.com/programs/dbpoweramp.html
which is not a site based on freeware but was made more for friends who
are always asking for stuff so don't knock it ;)

I hope so. ;)

17 people voted for dBpowerAMP last year during the PL2005 selection process. Please speak up if you plan to vote for it this year. Which version do you use/like/recommend/think should be listed on the PL2006 ballot?

the last freeware version
v 10.1 (2004-01) (dMC-r10.exe) (1484 KB)
http://www.dbpoweramp.com/bin/dMC-r10.exe

the Liteware version (mp3 encoder on 30 day trial license)
http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm

OK, *cough*, I've never actually voted on this stuff, just thrown my
occasional suggestion or assent into an existing nomination/whatever.

IF this is the way and the place to vote then I would vote for the version
10, I use it constantly. IF there is a specific time/manner/place to vote,
then......................................never mind. :)

Thanks for the feedback. This isn't a *vote* - just a question about
which version people prefer to have shown in the program description -
the LFW version or the Liteware version.

If the PL ballot listed the same program twice - 2 different versions -
the votes for the program would be split and chances are neither version
would be selected as Pricelessware.

Ah, thanks for more ore less bringing me up to speed. I would certainly go
with the v. 10, before the Fraunhofer people got involved.

That's what is surprising me about this year's whole voting thing. It's
quieter than in previous years, or was. Thanks Susan for the vote result
from last year.

It's still early days. . . but. . .

Every year *after* the PL selection process is complete there are
questions about why such and such an app isn't listed. The answer is
almost always the same. . . no one nominated it. . .

This year we'll be minus an entire web page if someone doesn't get busy
and post descriptions of WEB DESIGN apps. ;)

Thanks Susan for the vote result
from last year.

FYI - the vote is shown on the PL2005 nominations page (that's a change
from previous years when the vote count was removed):

I'd prefer to see the current version (v 11.5) on this years voting.

Couple of reasons for this.

The Fraunhofer folks have tracked down the dMC author and enforced
their patent rights on him. mp3 is patented and software authors need
to pay for the right to include mp3 in their software. In my mind,
this makes any software that includes mp3 something other than
freeware. Somebody, someplace is paying.

For those folks that insist on using mp3, no matter what, using a
version that doesn't include an mp3 codec allows them to install and
use the mp3 codec of their choice, not the choice of the author. This
is important because according to the mp3 experts at hydrogenaudio,
<http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php>, the preferred LAME
version is now LAME 3.97beta and I'd be quite surprised to find that
is the mp3 codec in dMC.

Audio is a moving target, as the technology evolves and improves. I
think the list of Pricelessware should keep up with the technology and
would like to see the latest version of dMC in the voting this year.

I've listed v 10.1 as that is the preferred version as this time. I'll
revise the description if that changes.
