[PL] PL2005 CD - it's time to get serious

Hi Jo,

Let us assume a 700MB file. Rarred and posted to abf in 100MB chunks
over seven days in yEnc format. Some coding overhead - I will guess at
30MB. Day eight for a few par files...

< snip >

So isn't 100MB over seven days the same data amount as....

downloading one file of 700MB

or

downloading 100MB a day of a 700MB single file ?

Which is Susan's point. :)

Why is downloading a 100MB file a day from a binary newsgroup
better than downloading 100MB a day of a single ISO ?

want to download the files myself. Feel free to read that a few times
until you grasp the idea here.
Hmmm. That's a funny way to ask someone to do you a favour.
I was being sociable until some jerkwater decided to spit shit. My original
question was if the ISO is going to be posted in a split file format. I
don't think that was too far off topic. WTF does it matter why I asked?

It matters because there might be a better way to help you, and/or
other dial up users, if people know why you asked for this method of
download in the first place.

To solve a problem people need to know what the problem is.

(1) Why is downloading "chucks" of an ISO file easier for you than
simply downloading part of the one ISO each day ?

(2) Why is downloading "chunks" of an ISO file easier for you than
simply downloading the individual files via the PL site ?

Regards, John.

I'm sure you do, but your opinion wasn't the basis of my original post.

I think Susan's point was whether many people would want this.
She/others may be more willing to make "chunks" available if 100
people wanted this than if eg. 1 wanted it.

I think Susan's question was a very reasonable one.

not to worry. . . I'm fairly certain that one will be omitted - the
author hasn't replied to my response to his response to my email
request. . . . and it's been a while since I sent it. . . still with
me? ;)

eek! - download = *nothing* - IIRC Debian would fill up a CD all by
itself. . . (we omitted it last year too)

sorry about that.

You and MAMEengineer are really going to town. :)

I just stopped over here for a rest break.

I've been slogging away at the "can we distribute it" end of things.
Have downloaded a few apps to check the EULAs - just finished
downloading an 8 MB file - that took half an hour. :( and NO - I
*don't* want to hear how long it would have taken you. . .

have a little pity please. . . ;)

I tend to agree with Susan on this. I would think that a lot of dial
up people don't have access to binary newsgroups. Even those
who do could well end up with missing posts. A web page would
be a much better distribution method even for dialup people.

It would seem like a lot of work for you to both upload the original
posts and answer the expected (I am missing part 27, 43, 111 etc)
queries.

I spend half my time on dial up, which is where I do most of my serious
usenet binary stuff.
If I were to want a 700MB file on dial up, I would much prefer to get it
on usenet, properly posted - inc par/par2 support - than from a web
server.

It is no real work to upload a 700MB file, rarred and yEnced with par
support, clearly flagged, over a 7/8 day period on broadband.

A dial upper who has problems with this has no real business on binary
usenet at this level.

A hopeless newbie who really can't cope? OK, I will repost him part 43.

Dunno.

I have loads of experience of downloading huge files from usenet on dial
up.
And no experience of downloading huge files from the web on dial up.

YMMV etc :)

No. The web pages have mostly links to download pages.

Thank you for volunteering. :) You probably know by now from his posts
that Steven Burn has downloaded the programs. I think/hope he'll create
the PL2005 CD/ISO as well. . .
