PL2005 CD - it's time to get serious ;)

status report:

http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2005/PL2005ProgramIndex.php

The programs approved to date for inclusion on the PL2005 CD are shown
with a "file" link. If they will *not* be included the column shows
"n/a". The blank spaces need to be filled in. . .

If you know that a EULA permits distribution please post that
information if a "file" link is not shown for the program. I still have
a few authors I'm going to try to contact (email bounced etc.).

----------

The autorun file will open this HTML page on the PL2005 CD:

http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2005index-CD.html

re the linked files for the CD - they're preliminary - in the to-be-done
department:

The readme file needs line breaks. . .
The program file lists (HTML and text files) will be completed after the
files have been downloaded.

the volunteers listed are:

2. Download programs for the CD
Omar
REMbranded

3. Create the CD and ISO (upload ISO, initial snail mail distribution)
Mark S.

4. volunteer burners
Mark Warner
Omar
REMbranded
Adrian Carter - adriancarterau (AT) yahoo (DOT) com (DOT) au
harsha godavari (Canada) -
Nicolaas Hawkins
Puppykatt (Western Canada, and North-Central U.S.A.)
Danny (Thailand)

5. Host PL2005 ISO
Army Redleg (limited distribution)

6. Create bit torrent
(no volunteer)

Mark S. appears to be among the missing - he hasn't posted for some
time. I believe we need another volunteer to compile the CD and possibly
volunteers to help with the downloading. If Army Redleg is still
planning to host the ISO someone who lives close to him would be ideal.

Is there a volunteer to create a bit torrent distribution?

Does anyone know of other sites that would be willing to host the ISO?

ISTM our revised target date to start distribution should be sometime in
January. We need volunteers to make the CD happen.

Comments? Questions? *Volunteers?*

I'd like to volunteer to burn CDs for the UK again.

I have lost my high speed access. There is a coffee shop I can try

Be out of town till next week, then I can help to download.

Thank you both. :)

*First* we need a volunteer compiler - then we *may* need additional
downloaders.

I could could compile the CD again this year *but* I don't have a high
speed connection *and* I'd like to spread the work load. The process
will go more smoothly and rapidly if someone with a high speed
connection volunteers to coordinate the downloading effort and compile
the CD.

This is the way I see the tasks:

Volunteer Downloader tasks:

1. create the PL2005 CD file directories using Path Creator and the .bat
file that's here: http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/ftp/2005PL-batch.bat
(that's a 5 minute job)

2. download files and place them in the appropriate directory (directory
name = app name). Note updates/changes from file information on the PL
web pages.

3. Burn files and mail to the PL2005 CD compiler.

4. Post revisions that are needed on the PL web pages.

FYI - last year three volunteers with high speed connections did the
downloading. IIRC they completed all the downloads in one night.

--------

Volunteer Compiler tasks:

1. Combine the downloaded files. Download updated files as needed.

2. Create ProgramList.txt (sample here):
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/ProgramList.txt

3. Email that file to me - then I'll complete:
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2005/2005PL-CD-programs.php

3. Download a zip file (I'll create that) containing the web pages for
the CD, unzip etc.

4. Create the checksum for the CD.

5. Upload/ snail mail copies of the completed PL2005 CD to volunteers
who will host the ISO and volunteer burners.

Have I forgotten any tasks? Do we have a volunteer to compile the CD?

Maybe one of you people handling the CD this year will get a clue and post
the ISO split into smaller files...rather than only in a one-file ISO...for
people who want to download on dial-up connections.

I think that's what the volunteer burners are for, right?

Here...listen closely...I think you'll be able to get the point I'm making
here. There are people on dial-up who want to download the files
themselves. An ISO is rediculously large to download on a dial-up. Doing
the intelligent thing of making a set of split files of the ISO available
would remedy the dial-up connection download. No, I don't want to pay
somebody for a copy of the CD. Did you get it that time? The point is I
want to download the files myself. Feel free to read that a few times until
you grasp the idea here.

Huh? In total isn't it the *same* rediculously large download. Maybe
even a tiny bit bigger than a single file. . .

No, I don't want to pay
somebody for a copy of the CD.

High download costs are one of the reasons we are creating a CD. The
comparison is postage cost vs. download cost. For many people on dial-up
the download cost would *far* exceed the cost of postage for a CD that
is burned and mailed to them.

Okay, I gather the idea is that *you* want to download the entire ISO in
"chunks" using a dial-up connection .

Do many other people want to do this? I hae me doubts. . .

Isn't downloading 700 MB the same as downloading 14 50 mb files?
No, I don't want to pay somebody for a copy of the CD.

I understand that thirty seven cents is a TON of money. Do you need a loan?
Did you get it that time?

Yeah, I got it - you're a knucklehead.
The point is I want to download the files myself.

Have a ball.

I have an idea: Blow me.

There ya go...I knew someone would get it...download a chunk or two at a
time. Me and alot of others. When I was running the files out of an ftp
last year I had on average of 25-35 people daily downloading the files.
That was until a couple of your newsgroup's script kiddies decided to try to
hack the server. I got so fed up with you peoples' bs that I took the files
offline.
Do many other people want to do this? I hae me doubts. . .

I'm sure you do, but your opinion wasn't the basis of my original post.

Hmmm. That's a funny way to ask someone to do you a favour.

(IIRC there were some unsuccessful attempts to upload
to alt.binaries.freeware. I don't think that's a viable means of
distribution.)

I disagree. And it would keep FossilButt happy. And presumable there is
more than one FossilButt
I will probably get the iso when it is available, and I am on the
broadband puter.
It would then be easy enough to up it to abf over, eg, a week.

25-35 people downloaded "chunks" of the PL2004 ISO every day from your
server?
