ping a printer

Can anyone tell me in laymans terms how to ping a printer
from the command prompt? How do I obtain the printer IP?
It is a HP LaserJet5 local printer. I cannot print from
there so I thought I would test to see if I could ping it.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

In order to ping something, it has to have a network interface, be
physically attached to your network, and have a valid IP address.

If it's only connected to your computer via a printer cable, then it
probably does not have a network interface, in which case you can't "ping"
it.

Here is a list of troubleshooting questions:

Has this printer worked before? On this computer or another computer? Is
the printer cable OK? Is the computer's printer port working--i.e., can you
print on a different printer using this computer? Is the printer able to
print a self-test page?

On the software side, is the Print Spooler service started? Is the correct
driver installed?

Bill:
Here is the situation: This win2000pro computer has
LaserJet5 attached to it. It printed fine and I could
print from dos apps or from command prompt. I bought new
computer (xppro) and networked them together via wireless.
After doing that, the win200pro machine (printer still
attached) would not print out of dos apps or command
prompt, but prints fine out of any windows app. I can
print to this printer from the other machine (windows or
command prompt). I moved printer and attached to new xppro
machine and I could print from windows or command prompt
no problem. I tried deleting printer on win2000pro machine
and reinstalled to no avail. Hope this explains a little
better for you to try and help me further. Thanks in
advance!!!

This question is not related to cmd prompt administration. Try asking your
question again in a printer-related newsgroup.

Here's my guess for what it's worth...

Did you update your printer driver at some point? IMHO... Some modern
printers/printer drivers no longer support DOS emulation, so sending print
jobs from DOS command line will not work, while the Windows apps continue to
print OK.
