Permissions for Workgroups

Hello,
I have two XP Pro computers (Host and Client) connected in a workgroup.
Simple File Sharing is disabled on both. I cannot change (or access) Client
permissions on a mapped drive to the Host computer. Only Host permissions
are accessible. The Client must write data to the Host located in a secure
area, but then allow the Client only read-only rights. Also, File Sharing on
the Host does not provide necessary restrictions. This seemed like a simple
setup, but now has me confused.

Can this be accomplished in a Workgroup configuration? Am I missing
something?

Thanks, Steve

In a workgroup, only the host computer can set permissions on shared
drives. If you want to configure the host's permissions while seated
at the client computer, you can use Remote Desktop to control the host
computer.

Ron Lowe and I have written an article that explains how to set share
permissions on the host:

After studying the “exhaustive tour†on file sharing, and making changes,
this is where I am:

1) Identical user names on both workgroup computers (\\HOST\USER1 &
\\CLIENT\USER1)were added.
2) On the HOST, a Shared Folder was created; USER1 was added to the Shared
Folder’s ACL and then allowed “Read†and “Change†Share Permissions.
“Everyone†group was removed and USER1 does not belong to any other Group.
USER1 was added to NTFS Permissions and Special Permissions were unselected
to disallow both “Delete†and “Delete Subfolders and Files.†Also selected
“Replace permission entries on all child objects…†to include subfolders and
files. There is no inherited permissions.
3) On the CLIENT, a drive (Z:) was mapped to \\HOST\SharedFolder. A
“Connect As…†box opened and added \\HOST\USER1 and password (it would not
accept \\CLIENT\USER1 ).

When I logon as \\CLIENT\USER1, I can still delete files on the mapped
drive. The permissions displayed on \\HOST\USER1 are “Read†and “List Folder
Contents.†Why?

Does \\CLIENT\USER1 permissions interact with \\HOST\USER1? I cannot access
permissions for \\CLIENT\USER1 on the mapped drive.

This is my extensive explanation, what should I check now?

Thank you for your expert help.
