I have setup file sharing between my host computer which
is on a domain and a client computer, a laptop on a
workgroup. The file sharing is working fine previously
but couple days ago suddenly it stop working(internet is
still ok)for no reason. The error msg on the mapped drive
to the host said "\\host_computername is not accessible.
You might not have permission to use this network
resource. contact the admistrator.... Login failure: the
user has not been granted the requested logon type at
this computer". I have been trying for 3 days using the
Network setup wizard to establish connection but although
i can see the host computer name under the My network
Places i seems to have this permission error i can't
resolve. Can someone help me with this or in general how
do you setup file sharing between a domain computer and a
workgroup computer. I can't figure out why previously i
was able to setup file sharing with no problem and now i
can't. Both computer have win xp pro. Thank you.

Chung,

You setup file sharing between a domain computer and a workgroup computer just
as between a workgroup computer and another workgroup computer - by having an
identical account / password defined on both computers, or by having the Guest
account enabled to the domain computer.

Did you make any recent changes to either computer?

I did not make any setting change to either computer but
I did a window update recently on the host computer
(domain) and both computer has most current window
updates. I do not understand your first question. The
host computer is belong to my company and thus is on a
domain setup, my client laptop is my own and is on
workgroup setup, i just want to access some folder
under 'my documents'. Strangly I was able to setup file
sharing previously without any problem.

Thank you.

Chung,

Setting up access between a server (host) on a domain, and a client (laptop) on
a workgroup, is just as simple as setting up access between two computers in a
workgroup. You use local accounts on both computers. Or you grant access thru
the Guest account. And remember to make passwords on accounts identical.

The document explains all the possibilities (and there are a lot of
possibilities).

My first (and only) question was whether you changed anything on either
computer. Assuming file sharing was working at one time, something changed to
make it stop working. Not to be facetious here, but chaotic behaviour like this
has to be caused by something.

Until you fix a file sharing problem with a pair of Windows computers, it's hard
to explain how intricate the relationships are. Depending upon the operating
systems, and authentication / authorisation schema used, the are too many
possibilities to discuss.

So let's start with the operating systems (name and versions) on each computer,
which may narrow the possibilities somewhat.
