LAN XP Problems

Hi all,

We have just wired cat5 cable throughout the house in order to set up a
LAN. We decided to use a crossover cat5 cable to connect the two
computers and I have ran into a jam. I set the network up on both XP
machines using NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller. On the host
machine (IP 192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0), I am able to ping the client.
On the client end (IP 192.168.0.196/255.255.255.0 Gateway
192.168.0.1), I am unable to ping the host. Both computers have the
same workgroup name. I can see both computers on my network places on
the host computer, but I am unable to even gain access to the workgroup
on the client end. I get the following error:

\\<name> is not accesible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out
if you have access permission.

The network path was not found.

I get the same error when attempting to access the client computer
(though I can ping and see the computer in my workgroup).

Also of note, I get a green active link light on the client computer,
but the host has no light. Both have orange (100MBS) transmission
lights.

Of final note, McAffee firewall is on client, zone alarm is on host...
I setup both up to allow access to each computer. Maybe I missed a
step?

Could anyone provide a bit of assistance? Thanks!

I should add the ipconfig screen for the host comp. I can provide
client upon request.

One of the most common causes of this problem would be a misconfigured or
overlooked personal firewall, or other security component. The nVidia nForce is
a new product, and is known to cause problems. There are several other
possibilities too, and any might be the cause of your problem. Read this article
with an open mind.

For more direct help, provide complete and unedited "browstat status" and
"ipconfig /all" from each computer, so we can diagnose the problem. Read this
article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (download

Yes, I do use an NFORCE board, and I have consulted the manual. There
are roughly 2 sentences regarding the Onboard LAN... Asus (A8N-VM CSM
board manual) was not very thorough. They made no mention of the
onboard firewall. I don't believe ActiveArmor was installed on my
maching (I opted for ZoneAlarm). I wish I had more time to research
but I have early AM house showings... Thanks for your help and I'll
post more as I research this weekend.

Make sure the nForce isn't part of the problem. Enumerate the LSP stack on both
computers please.

Zone Alarm is another likely suspect too.

Chuck,

Do you have these replies saved on your computer and then copy and paste
them in the discussion groups? It seems as though you give the same replies
word for word. LOL
