PC won't enter POST

I have a 2 year old, home built, PC that will not boot. The PC powers
up (fans, drives, etc.) but will not enter POST. The mother board is
a Gigabyte GA-8KNXP with a P4 2.4 Ghz processor.

I've removed a component at time, and have try re-seating the i/f
cards and the memory cards. I did have a P4 3.2 GHz in it, but that
was the first item I swapped out. I thought the CPU had simply over
heated.

What has really thrown me is that the PC will boot once in about every
10 attempts. Once it boots, it will run for about 10 minutes and then
simply freeze up. That's what led me to first think it was the CPU
that had overheated.

I've even swapped the battery for the CMOS/BIOS.

Have I tried everything? Is it time to buy a new mother board?

If it is, I am thinking using a ASUS board.

What BIOS are you running?, is it revision 1.0, 2.0 or 2.1 PCB?

REV 1 boards had problems with the dps2 boards blowing, but this sounds like
it could be your PSU on the way out.

Since it does boot up occasionally, it may be a bad power supply, an
over-heated CPU, or a bad memory chip. Check these items out first. Then, if
you still have a problem, try a "bare-bones" test. That is, remove
EVERYTHING from your system except the power supply, one memory chip, the
CPU & CPU fan/heat sink combo, and the video card. This includes
disconnecting all drives (both the data cables and power cables), the mouse,
the keyboard, etc.. Then power up and see if it posts. If it does, and does
it repeatedly, then start adding back your components one at a time until
post failure re-occurs - at which point you will have isolated the bad
component.

However, if it still does not post, remove the motherboard from the case and
sit it on a non-conductive surface. Jumper momentarily across the power
switch pins on the motherboard if you have disconnected that connection from
the case mounted switch (in order to start the system). If it posts this
time, then your motherboard had been shorted to the case (perhaps not enough
standoffs, thus allowing the motherboard to touch the case).

If you still cannot get your system to post, you have at least narrowed the
problem down to just a few components. Try a different memory chip first. If
no joy, then try a different power supply. If that doesn't do it, try a new
CPU (but be sure you also install and connect a good heat sink / fan combo).
If none of these things work, it is most likely your motherboard.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've managed to swap just about everything
with an older, working, computer. I was sure it was the power suppply
or CPU. But I've been able to rule those out.

The support at Gigabyte suggested removing the memory cards, which I
had tried. Still won't enter post.

I'm going to swap the motherboard, as it's the only thing I haven't
tried. I ordered a ASUS. Should be interesting. I'll post my results.

No. I just got my computer back.

taking out your CPU, or 1 memory without 1 in there ur computer does
not boot, first time i re-set the CMOS but second time it dont seem
to boot im in the situation o help
