When I turn on my Windows XP PC it appears to start with all the usual humming but the monitor displays "Power saving mode" message and windows doesnt start. Have tried switching off at the mains and returning but it still wont open
and I'm at a loss to know how to overcome this problem. Help will be very much appreciated.
Many thanks

Could you give us your system spec please? :)

And welcome to the forum

....sounds familiar...
have you tried the basics?
unplug the monitor from the computer then plug back in.
try using a diffrent monitor.
are you using onboard or do you have a AGP/PCI/PCI-E card installed?

and of course, system specs would be nice. so post em up :)

Stupid me! Its a AMD Athlon XP3000/Gigabyte GA7VT600L/LG 17" LCD Monitor L1720B/1024 memory. Thanks for your welcome message - am totally lost on this one!

have you tried a different monitor?

does your harrdrive sound like it is going into windows?

you should normally be able to hear the platters and the head spinning.

also see if you can replace your monitors power lead and the cable that runs between monitor or pc

1 - Tried the basics.
2 - Dont have another monitor to hand to try
3 - Am a 75 year old wrinkly with very limited knowledge of the innards of my PC
4 - Posted the spec in reply to Pot Guy kind response

Dont have another monitor to hand to try. Hard drive sounds like its going into Windows - it all sounds quite normal until this stupid power saving message pops up!

you must be one of our oldest members
brilliant to hear from you

sounds like a monitor problem to me

seek to try another take your pc to someones house and try it there.
that way you can rule out if it is the monitor or not

If the rest of the system is working, then it could be a faulty cable.

Do you have another one to hand?

Thanks for all your suggestions to help with my monitor problem. Turns out its the motherboard. Called in an expert who confirmed the problem and is replacing the faulty board. The PC is 3 years old - should have lasted a bit longer I'd have thought - anyway nice meeting up with you guys - your help was very much appreciated.
