Password at startup!

Have just installed xp pro and in trying to configure my laptop to the
network I inadvertently typed in a user name and password somewhere. Now I
can't recall the password and am denied access when I try to boot the
computer. How can I bypass the login and password screen so that I can
correct this mistake? I don't know where I might have originally assigned a
password, either.
 
I believe that your best course of action is to close the
lid on your laptop and leave it that way
