I would recommend trying Avast! antivirus.
I've been using it for over a year and its been great!
It's also FREE!

avast! 4 Home Edition Download

avast! Virus Cleaner is available free for every user.
This tool will help you remove selected worm infections
from your computer.

I would also recommend installing the new Windows Defender
antispyware program. It's also FREE!

| As I'm typing this I am downloading the free version of Panda Software's
| Titanium version. The dialog box says it will take a whopping 2 1/2
| hours to download. Actually, in the time I've taken to look for the
| answers to my questions on these sites, 48% of the download has
| completed, so it may not take that long. My main question is: 1) If I
| choose to buy the paid version, will it then take me that long again to
| download it? I hope not. I'm hoping buying it will just update what I've
| already downloaded and installed. Does anyone know?
|
| I have other questions:
|
| 2) If I buy the paid version, why is it certain costs for only 1 year,
| three years, etc? I thought I paid ONE fee and that's it, like any
| software. Is all anti-virus software like that now? (I think Norton
| is.) If so, why? I just want to pay some fee, whether it's $50.00 or
| $100.00 or whatever, download and install the software, and.....THAT'S
| IT! I've paid the fee and I now have the software FOREVER!!! I've
| bought it! Why do I have to pay more money later, like I'm paying rent
| or something?
|
| 3) I have the free AVG version but apparently when it scans and puts
| the viruses, trojans, adware, and spyware into the Virus Vault and I
| clear the Virus Vault all of it is still in my computer, according to a
| computer guy I had come in to install a video capture device. He advised
| me to take the free Panda Software Active Scan. I did, thinking it would
| be like the AVG scan except it would really get rid of the viruses, etc.
| Instead, after an hour of waiting, all the Panda Active Scan did was
| tell me what viruses I have and give me an option to purchase software
| to get rid of it! What a rip-off!! And I can't find anywhere on the
| internet that TELLS people that. So I wasted an hour of my life. Why
| don't they tell people that all they are doing is scanning your
| computer for viruses, not getting rid of viruses? So that's crap, but
| it seems their actual software that does the job is effective and
| efficient. I just don't want to waste a lot of time, which brings me
| back to question 1).
|
| I am a Windows XP user. Thanks.

If you don't want to have the workers doing updates, if you don't want
protection from newer malware, you know the things that take the company
time to make, time to determine a tracking method for, time to do
anything - which all equates to Cost for the company, you don't have to
pay for renewals, you can keep most AV products running in that last
updated state for a long time.

If you value the updated protection you get, value the work that the
company does to CONTINUE to provide detection/cleaning, then you value
it enough to pay for additional work the company has done for you.

If you want Free, then learn how to secure your computer and systems
from attack and you won't need ANY AV software.

I must first say stop wasting your time the AVG software is just as good and
I pursing believe better than panda AVG does offer a paid version which does
exactly what you looking for only pay once and you get the program and all
its updates.

What your tech guy did not inform you is the reason why AVG vaults some
viruses it does eliminate and fix most viruses but just like any antivirus
software panda included it will vault certain viruses that are too new to
delete and will only delete them after the program has been updated. New
viruses come out hourly and it is virtually impossible for any antivirus
software to keep up-to-date and it only realizes a new virus after it has
been in use so the vaulting of these viruses or unknown items on your
computer is a safety feature until the software can learn more about the
program.

And I to believe that there is something called customer service and you
should only have to pay for a product not continue on pain the individual who
made the comment above is one of the reasons why the software companies make
millions and try to take as much as they can out of our pockets you do not
buy a car and then continue on paying for that card each year you buy the car
and you get the car and if there is a recall you then get the fix for free by
buying the product to companies are expected to have the product in working
order continuously updates should be a free situation I mean if you need to
do an update that means that it was not right the first time then let me
return it and I will purchase it again with the new updates

And you car, if needed a RECALL is not the same as you wanting to put
new higher performance tires on it, nor is it the same as having to
repaint it after X years.

The product is as cheap as the company can afford to sell it for and
still make profit margins it deems necessary.

If no new viruses came out, you would not need any additional software
development and would not need any virus definition updates. Since new
threats arrive every day, since it costs money to write detection
methods, and none of those are free.

If you don't want to support a company that makes a profit, then use the
free versions and get what you pay for - as an example, in my
experiences with systems in the wild, AVG FREE is not a viable solution
and is only about 85% effective, and it's slower as heck on catching the
new viruses.

Oh, and one last thing, program fixes are almost always free - virus
definition updates are NOT program fixes and they are not free.

My reply is mixed with your words ,but first you are probably on a dial-up
->very slow conncetion and you'll have problems no matter which antivirus
software you install because of the slow updates.
I advise you change to DSL/Cable broadband connection .

Panda_man : No ,you pay money to have one,two or more years licence
whichgives you not the program but the updates and the services such as daily
updates , free tech support ,sending files for analyze and so on.I advise you
to buy the software only for 1 year because if you buy for more you'll still
use old version.
When you buy Panda , Panda Software will give you a CD which you install the
program from.

Panda_man : All online scanners only check your computer ,they just are
unable to remove malware because most malware is active ,you need antivirus .

By the way ,I have been using Panda for two years and little bit more and
you'll see why it is so good.More info here:
