1. computer will not recognize my USB- connected devices such as iPod,
camera, or DVD drive, even though when i first connected each of them, they
worked fine for a while.

2. computer will only go online in safe mode with networking, even though i
used to be able to go online in regular mode.

3.system restore does not solve these problems, and troubleshooting is of no
use.

Your system may infested with Malware/Viruses, you need to check it first
and be sure it is clean from those.
Try to log into your Event Viewer and look for any Error messages with Red
crosses and see which application/Hardware causing the Problm.

Your system is XP and it wont see USB devices? when this kind of thing
happens, backup files. get a 2nd disk drive and install it, then move your
important files there, then proceed with testing?

there is a point where its about time, how long to figure out WHY, versus
totally starting over. What I have found to work well is just buy a new
disk drive. Once the "new" disk had been returned, had winXP and viruses on
it. nice. But the wrapper on the disk was open, so all bets were off.

Anyhow just install the new disk, then re install windows, anti virus,
firewall, then applications, etc. I also found that going to the store and
buying the newest XP upgrade is easiest because it has the latest features.
After its all done, put the old disk drive into one of those IDE external
drive things w/USB. all your data files are there and everything works

1. Right-click on My Computer and choose Properties. Click Hardware Tab and
click Device Manager (Start Key and Pause Break is shortcut)
2. Is there any yellow exclamation sign on any of device. Especially in
front of "Universal Serial Bus controllers". If it is there any then on what
device it is?
3. If it is in front of USB Controllers then you need to reinstall USB
drivers from your motherboard CD or you can dowload from your motherboard's
manufacturer web-site.
4. If there is no USB controller in the Device Manager list then they could
be disabled from BIOS / CMOS settings. Restart your computer and press DEL or
F2 (or the key specify to enter in BIOS / CMOS setup). Here you have to look
for the entry something called like "OnBoard USB". Make this setting enable.

If that doesn't solve the problem, let us know!
