Outlook vs Outlook Express address books - eternal conflict?

D

Deep Thought

Situation: my mail/news client of choice is Outlook Express - for
agenda/main contacts list I wish to use Outlook. Important reason for
continuing with Outlook is that I need it in order to sync with my PDA
cellphone.

Problem: I have to set the mail transport as Outlook otherwise the sync
software does not work (despite the fact that I do not actually sync mail -
just the agenda/contacts/notes)... result is that I appeared to have lost my
address book for Outlook Express in the process. Is there any way I can
run the two address books independantly? (I also notice that I can no longer
create "groups" in the OE address book)

Don't think too deep, and keep OE for news only.

Alternatively buy a better PDA. For years I struggled with the same kind of
stupid problems, till I bought a smartphone based on windows. Problems over,
always very fast and reliable synchronisation.

Its going to be a wrench moving from OE to Outlook for mail... I know it can
be clanky but on face value seems to have more facilities that Outlook and I
am totally savvy with all its features/settings (have used for last 8yrs).

I don't understand your question. The 2 address books are completely
independent. The only time they aren't is if you are running an outdated
Outlook version in IMO mode, in which case sharing of the address book can
be disabled very simply.

When I last set-up Outlook 2000 (on a Win95 p.c.) to be the preferred email
client (I had to do that in order that the PDA sync software worked) it
effectively stole/deleted the address book from OE (I had previously set OE
to share contacts with Outlook as I vaguely recall) - so it seemed very odd
behaviour. I did try and export a copy of Outlook address book back into OE
but this did not seem to work and when I started rebuilding the OE address
book manually I noticed I appeared to have lost the ability to create email
GROUPS... so all in all a frustrating experience. I still would prefer to
use OE as my mail client as Outlook is a bit of a security liability I
gather but it seems that Outlook does not enjoy co-existing with OE on the
same p.c. Another irritant is the fact that if you change the setting in
Internet Explorer/Programs to use Outlook Express as mail client (i.e. when
using website mail links) it seems to screw up your Outlook settings again.

Start at the beginning and tell us what mail support mode you are using.
Even if you are using Internet Mail Only mode, you are never forced to share
the address book with OE. Just disable sharing OE's address book > Tools >
Options...
