What is "Outlook Adress Book" and "Contacts" lists for?

Outlook/Tools/Addressbook

Give two possibilities:

Outlook Address Book
Contacts

My Contacts are many from Outlook Express.

But my Outlook Address Book is empty.

If I type a letter into the "To" box for new mail I sometimes get a
selection list and sometimes I do not. Depending on the letter I type.

If I do get a list I don't think it comes from the Contact list because
adding to that list does not change the selections offered. Does seem it can
come from the empty Outlook Address Book list.

Where is the selections I'm offered coming from?

What is the Contacts list used for.

What is the Outlook Address Book list used for.

Why did the addresses from Outlook Express get put into the Contacts list?

Thanks for any help

This is what you should see.
What is the Contacts list used for.

It is used to convert contact names to e-mail addresses.
What is the Outlook Address Book list used for.

It is a container that will hold the names of contacts folders that contain
contacts and that are enabled as address books.
Why did the addresses from Outlook Express get put into the Contacts
list?

Because you told Outlook to do that when you installed it.

The selections you get when typing in the To: are from the autocompletion
cache which have nothing to so with your Contacts. It is a list of
previous recipients.
As for the rest, read this primer:
