outlook unable to connect to smtp

I'm using a trial version of Office Outlook. Although I am receiving email
without any problems I find I am unable to send.
I've tried configuring with two separate email accounts and the results are
the same.
I get a message stating that Outlook is unable to connect to the smtp
server. I've also tried configuring it to use with Outlook Connector to use
with my windows live account and it's the same story.
I've just tried phoning the support line and been told that there is no
telephone support for users of trials. I tried going to their website for
email assistance and was refused access because product key is apparantly not
the same as my product ID although that is only ID I have been sent.
Oh - unless of course, I want to pay for the privellege of sorting out their
problem.
Anyone got any suggestions?
If anyone from microsoft happens to read this I will be buying a Mac next
time!

And the FULL message is?
Have you tried the "Test Account Settings" button in Email accounts? That
usually gives a bit more detail as to the problem...

Yes, I have. And I've tried deleting all the account details and starting again.
 
<sigh> and what was the ERROR MESSAGE? IN FULL please. No-one here can SEE
your computer - we can't diagnose any sort of problem without FULL
DETAILS...
 
You do not have a product key for a trial version of Outlook. Unless you plan
on purchasing the full version within the very short--less than 30
days--trial period, set up your email using Windows Mail or another free
email program. Outlook Trial Version must be activated to work. More info at
the Office Web Site.

Yes I was given a product key, I received this email and used the product
key to activate my account.

''To activate your trial, follow the instructions below:

Here is your product trial key: Microsoft® Office Professional 2007
K7YKB-KHB32-W4KBX-CRBXM-P36YW

• Open up your product trial.
• Enter the trial key when prompted.
• Start your trial.
• The sooner you start, the more time you have to enjoy the trial.''.

I have tried using outlook with my usual email provider plus two free email

Tried disabling the software firewall on your host and checking if
Outlook then connects okay?

Did you yet try disabling the e-mail scanner in your antivirus program?

"Outlook is unable to connect to the SMTP server." Prove it by showing
the complete error message.

It connects happily to POP then says ''None of the authentication methods supported by this client are supported by your server.''

<another sigh> If you do "Test Account Settings" in Email Account setup then
it will more than likely tell you what the problem is. Do that, and post the
ENTIRE message that is generated here.

<yet another sigh> that's what i just did.

OK for all those of you out there who I know are struggling with this
problem, here's what finally worked for me.

My situation was this: I could receive emails but not send. When I went into
Account Settings through tools and performed a ''Test Account Setting'' my
server would happily connect to the incoming pop server but then wouldn't
connect to the outgoing smtp server.
I would get a message reading ''None of the authentication methods supported
by this client are supported by your server.''
If you're getting this message click ''More Settings'' and then click the
''Outgoing Server'' tab.
Then, contrary to what Microsoft recommend in their Help and Support pages,
untick the box which says ''My outgoing server(SMTP) requires
authentication.''
On returning to the account setting test I got an error message 550 but
found that despite this I could now send email.
Hope this is helpful.
It's taken me a day and a half to sort it out and I don't quite understand
why Microsoft can't sort out their own technical issues and provide adequate
support for their customers.
Their days in my household are numbered.

On this planet you do. I downloaded Office 2007 trial and was mailed
a key to activate it. No have key, no you use.

Wrong again (that's two outta two... not GOOD). I installed that
trial version on 11/3... expiration: January 31, 2009! A tad more
than 30 day, HUH?
