outlook.pst and outlook1.pst files??

Hello,

I was looking at the menus in outlook, trying to see what data file
management and pst files is about. Confusing. To see, I clicked data file
management. I higlighted the file shown in the box and then clicked on open
folder. It showed an outlook.pst and outlook1.pst. Why is this, do I need
both? Does it make any difference? What are they for? How do I know things
are set up ok? I did not move anything from a different computer, and had
outlook express before. I have Outlook 2003, windows xp, a stand alone
home computer, and pop3 email account. Thank you for your help.

Those are the names of the PST files Outlook creates by default each time
you create an Outlook profile. Whether or not you are actually using either
of them depends on how you configured your profile. You would know that. We
wouldn't. To see which PST file you are currently using, examine the
properties of your root folder in your Outlook Profile.

Hello Russ,

Thanks for the reply. I only created one profile. Or it created itself
when I set up outlook. I don't know. What do you mean root folder? I guess
I need to know if I need to change anything or if it ok like it is. Thanks.

If nothing's broken, you have nothing to fix.
Root Folder is the Top level folder in Folder view.

Thank you for the help, Russ. I think all is working ok. I just wondered if
there was duplicate unneeded stuff that might cause trouble, or if things
could land in the wrong file.

The files are harmless and won't cause any trouble. You can always delete
them if you aren't using them.
