.pst files in Outlook 2003?

My Outlook has produced a Outlook1.pst and a Archive1.pst file and the files
are up to date. There is a Outlook.pst and a Archive.pst and these files is
dated february 2007. Can I rename the Outlook- and Achive.pst til .old and
then rename the Outlook1.pst and the Archive1.pst to their proper names and
the delete the *.old files - and get away with it?

The naming of the pst-file is unimportant to the functioning of Outlook so
why do you want to change it?
Before starting delete anything I would check what is in those pst-files by
connecting them to Outlook via;
File-> Open-> Outlook Data File...

After that you can still decide to disconnect and delete them and rename the
originals. Make sure you point Outlook back to the correct renamed files
then.

Is there a particular need for the files to have what you deem to be their
'proper names'? If things are working now, there's no real need to rename
the files

There is no 'proper name' you can name them allmost anything you like.
Likewise there is no 'proper location', there is a default location as there
are default names
The first outlook data file is named outlook.pst by default, this is
incremented by '1' for each subsequent creation.

I just wonder why the names was changed in february 2007. Can I just delete
the Oulook.pst and the Archive.pst? They are obviously not in use? They don't
make any harm so I could just let them be.

No special reason. I just wonder why they changed their names in february
2007. You are right - if it works don't fix it.

I wonder if someone created a fresh profile or something back then. You
might want to keep the older one for the items in there.

My Outlook has also created an Outlook1.pst and Archive1.pst file. But
they are unused and empty; Outlook continues to use my original
Outlook.pst and Archive.pst files.

I don't know where these files come from; they were created some time
after I installed Office 2003 SP3. I have tried to delete them, but they
were automatically recreated.

I have also, as you did, decided to just leave these alone.

I guess you could, but don't you want to open those old files first and
make sure there's nothing useful in them?

Does it really matter what the filenames are?
