moving Outlook pst files

Jeff

I use Outlook Express for my email and newsreading, but I use Outlook
2002 for my calendar and appointments in my XP laptop.

I recently successfully moved my outlook.pst file to my data partition
for safety, using the instructions on
www.howto-outlook.com/howto/backupandrestore.htm

Everything went fine, but I am perplexed by a statement in the
instruction on that page that says:
"You're done! If all is successful and desired you can delete the
renamed pst-file in the old location. You might need to recreate some
"move to folder" Wizard Rules to update the new location."

1. What "move to folder" Wizard Rules is he talking about and how do I
create them?

2. The files I moved to the new location are:
archive.pst
extend.dat
Outlook1.pst
Outlook.pst

I can understand Outlook.pst and Archive.pst, but what are the
"Outlook1.pst" and "extend.pst" files about?

Thanks.

1) Inbox rules that move/delete items based on criteria (From memory, see
Tools > Rules and Alerts)

2) extend.dat is the only file that can't be moved (and it isn't a big deal
if you tried/delete it. Outlook will recreate it at next startup. this dat
file is a tracking file of what addins are being loaded by Outlook.)

Outlook doesn't like to overwrite PST file(s) when new profiles are made.
So anytime you see a Outlook.PST, Outlook1.PST, Outlook2.PST, .etc, it just
means that there has been a couple of generations of e-mail profiles files.
Just remember that these Outlook1.PST, Outlook2.PST, .etc can store your
e-mail, contacts, calendar, .etc data.

Thank you neo.

So, if I have a current Outlook.pst file with 2,041 KB would it be safe
to delete may Outlook1.pst file with 64 KB?

Thank you.

I always recommend open, review, close, and delete. Never fails that if I
don't say this, someone ends up deleting something they really needed.

That makes sense, Neo. Question is 'how' to open it to review it. When
I click on
Outlook1.pst a popup asks me what to open it with. When I say Outlook a
popup comes up that says "Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. The command
line argument is not valid. Verify the switch you are using."

Outlook itself opens just fine when I click on its desktop shortcut. If
within Outlook I click on File\Open\Outlook Data File\ Outlook1.pst what
opens up is no different than what I had before - that I can tell.
(Maybe it did not succeed in opening it?)

If I open it with notepad, I can only see gibberish.

Is the any other way to review what is in Outlook1.pst before I delete
it?

Start Outlook. File > Open > Outlook Data file. When done reviewing,
r-click on "Personal Folders" and select close/disconnect > Close Outlook >
Delete the PST.
