Outlook Express "Unknown Error"

S

Shawn

I didn't copy the entire error message before closing it, I just know that
it says "an unknown error has occured" and shows the mail account info -
This happens with the GUI for Outlook closed. We send a command through our
software to send a mail message. As soon as I open Outlook manually and
click "send/receive" the message sends (sitting in outbox already).

I've deleted the identity, and recreated it. I've also deleted the .dbx
files as well for the different mail folders but it still happens. We have
about 50 PC's setup exactly the same and this is the only one that does
this. Like I said, the message is in the outbox when i open Outlook, and it
sends when i click send and receive. This only happens when we send the
message through our software which is exactly the same software running
perfectly on 49 other systems.

Thanks in advance,
Shawn

Your subject says Outlook Express but your message says Outlook, but info in
your post indicates Outlook Express (.dbx files, identities).

Repost to the outlookexpress.general group and include the full error
message, they are likely going to need it.

In Outlook Express select Tools, Options, Send and verify that the box
before "save copy of sent messages in Sent Items folder" is checked. If
it is then it is likely that the Sent Items folder or Outbox has
corrupted. If you
allow the Inbox, the Sent Items or Deleted Items folders to become over
large they are prone to corrupt.

In Outlook Express place the cursor on Local Folders and select File,
Folder, New and name your new Folder AASent. Move any messages in your
Sent Items folder to AASent folder.

Next in Outlook Express ascertain the file path to the Store
Folder -Tools, Options, Maintenance, Store Folder. Next place the cursor
on Local Folders and select File, Work Offline followed by File, Folder,
Compact All. Do not attempt to interupt or stop the process until it has
completed. Close Outlook Express when it has completed.

Now go to Start, Control Panel, Folder Options, View, Advanced Settings
and verify that the box before "Show hidden files and folders" is
checked and "Hide protected operating system files " is unchecked. You
may need to scroll down to see the second item. You should also make
certain that the box before "Hide extensions for known file types" is
not checked. Next in Windows Explorer make sure View, Details is
selected and then select View, Choose Details and check before Name,
Type, Total Size, and Free Space.

In Windows Explorer using the file path obtained earlier locate the
Outbox.dbx, and Sent Items.dbx and delete both. New files will be
automatically created when you next open Outlook Express.

Next in Outlook Express try sending an email to yourself. Please let us
know if this resolves your problem?

You should stress to whoever regularly uses the computer that they
should not interupt Automatic Compacting. You can manually compact

In Outlook Express place the cursor on Local Folders and select File,
Work Offline followed by File, Folder, Compact All. Do not attempt to
interrupt or stop the process until it has completed. Close Outlook
Express when it has completed.

Thanks Gerry, but I ran accross that post on the net already and tried all
of that.

Also, OE is not setup to receive emails, and it only sends one per day, so
the usage is pretty low.

This style of error will also occur if the Sen Item folder has reached
the "max" size. Clean up the standard folders: Inbox, Deleted Items,
Sent Items and Drafts.

Outlook (OL) and Outlook Express (OE) are not the same application. Please
be careful with your shorthand.

Assuming you're referring to OE here:

Is the computer in question running WinXP SP2 or SP3?

Is Windows (Desktop) Search installed?

Is OE open/running when the behavior is encountered?

OE Tools | Options | Send | Send message immediately <=Is this option
enabled or disabled?

Does the user adhere to *all* of the following caveats?...

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working
offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- Do not cancel Automatic Compacting, should it occur, and do not attempt to
close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic Compacting
is taking place.

- Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It can cause
corruption (i.e., loss of messages) and provides no additional protection:
