Outlook 2003 contact issue

I will try and make this as short and detailed as possible.

I have a user who has a laptop. This user used a external USB Hard drive to
backup to backup his entire laptop drive. Well the drive on the laptop gave
out and I ordered a new one and installed it. I loaded the laptop new HD with
WinXP (updated from Win2k) and Office 2003 (updated from OfficeXP). I went to
recover the emails and contacts but could not recover the contacts. Can
anyone tell me how to recover them. I can recover the emails so I know they
are backed up but can't find them. Thanks,
