Outlook 2000 and message re: need to also have Outlook Express

I have Outlook 2000 which I use solely for Contacts and , occasionally
, Calander.

I have XP Pro and have recently updated this to SP 2.

Whether its due to the SP2 installation or not , after several years
of using Outlook 2000 , today , when I click on the icon to launch
this App I get the message :- "Outlook requires Outlook Express 4.01
or greater ......etc " with an "OK " button.

If I click on the OK Outlook 2000 launches normally.

I don't use Outlook Express as I use Eudora .

How do I prevent this message from appearing each time I want to
launch Outlook, please ?

By ensuring Outlook Express is properly installed.

Check here:
"OL2000: "Outlook Requires Microsoft Outlook Express 4.01 or Greater" Error
Message If You Start Outlook"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;320863&Product=out2K

Method 1 - install OE - is by far the easiest solution.

The trouble with this reference , it would seem , is that Method 1
only applies to Win 95, Original Win 98 or Win NT 4.0 and Win 98 SE.

There is no mention of XP Pro .

Install OE if you haven't!

Install OE if you haven't!

I'm still getting this message when trying to launch Outlook 2000 (
Internet Mail Only version )

Perhaps I should explain here more fully than I did in my original
post.

Firstly , once this message appears stating that I must have Outlook
Express v.4.0 or greater installed , if I then click OK , Outlook 2000
opens ands works normally.

Secondly I DO have Outlook Express already installed - its v.6.0
This also works OK if I click it .

I tried to use Method 1 as you suggested - ( is this method applicable
to XP Pro ? )

As I'm not certain Method 1 is applicable to XP Pro I tried the
following :-

I checked ( C.P.- Add/Remove Programs - Add/Remove Windows Cpts ) and
noted Outlook Express was already checked . This is what I assumed it
would be as it was working OK !

I then unchecked OE and re-booted the PC.

I then re-checked OE and re-booted once more so that OE had now been
re-installed .

Is this Method 1 as applied to XP Pro ? ( In the URL mentioned in your
reply XP is not included as applying to Method 1 )

This failed to solve the problem with the warning message .

I have not yet tried the other Methods mentioned in your reference URL
as I don't want to get into changing Registry entries unless it is
absolutely necessary and they seem very complicated and I'm not
certain I understand all that they are saying.

What really puzzles me here is why do I suddenly get this problem
message when launching Outlook when I have not either
uninstalled/re-installed Outlook and/or Outlook Express recently and
have never had such a message previously ?

The only change I have made that occurs to mind is the installation of
XP Pro SP2 just shortly before these symptoms appeared.

have you updated Xp to SP2 level yet?
Maybe the update to OE in that will correct the problem.

As I have mentioned in my original post and again in my replies , I
have upgraded to SP2 and it was shortly after doing so that this
message appeared .

Whether those two actions are related or not is one of the things I'm
wondering about .

I'd check the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Active
Setup\Installed Components\{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}]

and see if it is set to everything between the *****'s below except for the
first line.
If it isn't then create a reg file from what is between the *****'s and
Merge it (copy it into a text file, save with a .reg extension then
right-click and select merge) then reboot. export any current settings in
that key first. If those settings are incorrect then OE is not being seen as
installed. The only time you will actually be in the Regsitry is to check
that key and export it before you merge (assuming it is incorrect).

Bill thanks for that last reply .

However , before I read that reply , I had already taken some
independent action which might be of interest to anyone with a similar
problem.

In trying to illiminate XP SP2 as the possible cause of this or , at
least a corruption due to SP 2 , I re-installed a Drive Image file of
my C: drive which I had created just before installing SP 2 .

This action cured the Outlook problem discussed here in this thread
which launched normally in the XP SP1 version.

I then re-installed SP2 and this then also worked OK - i.e Outlook
launches normally with XP Pro SP2 now re-installed.

I hesitate to say that this has illiminated the problem - ( computers
can hear these statements !! ) - but hopefully it has.

I'm saving your Registry suggestion for information - I might , if I
have time , go back to the Image File which gave the Outlook error
later and see whether that indicates what actually happened .

Thanks for the suggestions and help.

that's good. I almost suggested the reinstall of SP2. I expect your first
install didn't fully register OE. I've done a reinstall of XP SP2 myself and
it caused no issues.
