outline numbered list has incorrect numbers at level 4

i have a document that contains an outline list, that uses Heading styles,
and is used to generate the TOC.

Level 1, 2, 3 are all fine. so:
1 Major Subject 1
1.1 Sub Major Subect 1
1.2 Sub Major Subject 2
2 Major Subject 2
2.1 Sub Major Subect 1
2.2 Sub Major Subject 2
2.3.1 Sub Sub Major Subject
2.3.2 Sub Sub Major Subect
1.2.3.1 Sub Sub Sub Major subject

for some reason the numbering breaks. i've been thru the formatting of the
styles, formatting of the number/outline. i would like to be able to go into
the "Customize Outline Numberd List" window and fix it in the "Number Format"
box, but i can't fix the auto/generated numbers in the numbering sequence.
so when i look at the number format the above window, it says "1.2.3.1"

any ideas?

more information: i noticed that the last number in the previous list (in
this case a '2', and puts it in the first position. so if level 3 were
4.2.9, the next entry would be 9.4.2.1

so the number in the 3rd position of level 3 ends up in the first position
for level 4.

You've got the fields in the wrong order in the "Number format" box at Level
4. The easiest way to fix it is to clear the box and start from scratch.
With the box empty, click the arrow beside "Previous level number" and click
Level 1, then type a period. Repeat for Levels 2 and 3, then select 1, 2, 3
for the "Number style" and OK.

When you do this, make sure you go into Modify Style through Heading 1, then
select Level 4 to modify. For more, see

one final question. now i can't seem to get the font color to set correctly.
all the previous levels are a blue color (RGB 2,53, 103). i've played
around with trying to set the color of the numbers w/o success. the font
color for the text is fine.

The numbers will take on the color applied to the paragraph mark. If this
does not suffice, you can format the numbers themselves explicitly in the
Numbering dialog.

i can't get level 4 to cooperate. it always defaults back to 'automatic'
color. in the bullet/number dialog box, it will show as, say magenta, if i
set the color to magenta for level 4, but when you save and go back to the
document, the number color is back to black (or automatic). when i go back
to the bullet/number dialog, i see the magenta version in the list of options
for level 4, but the one automatically selected is not the magenta - it's the
black/automatic one.

i've tried to change the color everyway i can figure it out.

yes i did. i have noticed that the named list template doesn't appear in the
list of styles. level 5 formatting, based on level 4 is fine (the correct
color).

You should have a separate style for each list level, with the level linked
to that style. For example, you can use the List Number, List Number 2, List
Number 3... series or the Heading 1, 2, 3... series.

yes i've set that up (checked and rechecked).

can i delete that format or recreate one (without destroying the outline
numbering that is already in place)?

Yes, blow that all away and start from scratch.
