Outlining Question , Want Level 1 to be 1.1, 1.2....2.1

Can you think of way to start my level 1 outlining with the following. e.g.,
1.1, 1.2, 1.3....2.1, 2.2

1.1
1.2
1.3
(a)
(b)
(i)
(ii)
2.1
2.2

I know how to do it at level 2, etc using previous number. Presently I can
only get Word to produce the 1. And the previous number is grayed out.
