Out of curiosity - I read on one of the mac NG's that Internet Explorer has
been discontinued for both Windows and Mac. I had previously heard only
about the Mac; is it true IE is now dead on Windows?

Depends on your definition of dead. Anyway, Microsoft has no plans to
discontinue it. There will be a much improved (security wise)
version of IE included with SP-2 whenever it's released.
