OST Files for Outlook 2000 and 2003

Is there any harm in copying a user's Outlook 2000 OST to 2003? We are trying to mimimize the time it takes for Outlook to synchronize on the very first exit.

FYI -- We are using Symantec Ghost to re-image the pc.

Thank you.

Which version of Exchange? *If* the ost will reconnect correctly and if you
use an older version of Exchange, probably not.

Thank you Diane for your assistance. We're currently using Exchange 2000; doesn't Outlook 2003 use Unicode format and previous versions use ANSI which has a 2 gig size limit? Would the OST automatically be converted to Unicode format?

Outlook chooses the ost format based on the server and I don't think (but I
didn't try) the force Unicode key will work with older servers. I didn't
check cached mode against Ex2000 - in 5.5, you'll get an ANSI ost.

Assuming Outlook 2003/Exchange 2000 combination allows a Unicode ost, you'll
need to create a new one - Outlook2003 can't convert an ost created by an
older version of Outlook.

I thought there was something in the ORK or in one of the Exchange
whitepapers that had a way to do what you want to, avoid bandwidth issues.
It's possible it applied only to the offline address book though.

You might want to repost the question in an exchange newsgroup - they may
have some suggestions for you.

WHat I find interesting in the Resource kit is that you have the option to
set Outlook to force creation of a new ost file in Unicode if the old one is
in ANSI. I am still attempting to make that work.

Yes, and according to that article, Ex2000 will support Unicode. As long as
you use exchange 2000, that should work (provided you don't allow imap and
http accounts in the profile) - are you getting any errors?
