Operating system not found

Dear friends;
I have a presario 705US that came preloaded with windowsXP home edition, I also have quickRestore CD's. The computer recently does not start up the windows, upon turning it on it beeps for a few seconds then, I get the above error "operating system not found". When I load in my quickRestore CD #1, computer recognizes it runs a small program, Windows 98, tells me files are loaded and to restart, but it gets hung up in the same spot. Any suggestions? I don't have any Disc with WindowsXP home edition that came with the computer but I have the code label at the bottom of my lap top. Can I download a backup copy and install it?
any help is appreciated.
