Operating system not found

Hi. Sometimes when computer is loading on that first screen where the cache
memory and othe is checked,, the loading stops very often. It stops on the
cd/dvd rom, when checking this cd-rom. Sometimes stops on hard drive too,
but rarely in compare with the cd/dvd rom.
I'm using xp, service pack 2, cd rom is matshita uj-84 Db, the hard drive is
samsung
hm080ji, i'm guessing that it is something with booting on the begining and
the bios options? I'm not so skilfull with bios and other so i wouldn't
like to
get worse the sitaution then already is.
further, when it stops on the first screen, on the computer-loading stage,
it take a 2-4 min and then the computer comes blocked and in the middle of
the screen is the message 'system down' following the unpleasant noice of
piip. The first week after i bought computer the mesage was just 'Operating
system not found'. Could someone please help me to solve this problem?
