Operating Dialup and DSL Connections at the Same Tme??

Sam

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 computer with windows XP Pro (SP2) installed.
Just recently I subscribed to the SBC/Yahoo DSL service. Prior to this new
internet connection, I was using a dialup connection with MSN as my ISP and
have elected to continue this service as well because of the transition
period.

I am wondering if there would be any danger of damage to my computer if both
internet connections were running at the same time? I did try this for
about two or three minutes yesterday and it did seem to work. However, I
was concerned about some type of file(s) corruption. The dialup has its own
modem (Conexant HSF V92 56K RTAD Speakerphone) as does the DSL connection
(2Wire). For example, the only way I can visit this newsgroup
(microsoft.public.windowsxp.general) is thru the MSN dialup connection.
What I do now is to read the postings on this newsgroup, then disconnect
from MSN and enable the NIC card to access the SBC DSL connection. And if I
want to send an email message using MSN, then I disable the NIC card, and
reconnect to MSN thru the dialup.

If anyone has a better way to mange my type of situation, I would very much
appreciate the help, Sam

P. S. I suspect that I may keep the MSN connection for a long time since I
have been using my MSN email address for over twelve years and I don't want
to lose access to certain MS and MSN features and functions. Supposedly
there is a MSN premium service whereby you pay only ten dollars a month for
access to MSN service if you have another ISP as primary. However, I could
not understand the MSN tech person and so will have to phone them back again
and try to get further clarification. Any thoughts on this situation would
also be very much appreciated.

You would be better off getting a knowledgeable friend or computer
professional to help you with the MSN premium service or call and speak
to another MSN tech. It sounds very much like AOL's "Bring Your Own
Access" whereby you can use AOL's resources but you access the Internet
with a broadband provider's equipment (like DSL or cable). If MSN
offers something similar, then you should do this because you'll get to
keep your MSN email address, etc. and have the advantage of the
high-speed connection.

Thanks very much for your reply. Will try to contact MSN tech support again
and maybe the language barrier will not be as difficult as last time. Have
a good week, Sam.
